For what i can gather from your post Nick you mention 3mail. This is
NOT free and never has been. If you send via 3mail its 10p, with a
picture 25p etc. 3mail is free to receive but not send.
Mobile Mail is a seperate service that is included in X series and is
free, 3mail is not.

I have had Xseries since launch and can confirm it is superb and have
not been charged for included services.

Kind regards,
Steve

To send email just set up a new POP3 email account in settings, then
set this up as default, all sent emails will then be free.

but it will have to send with 3's smtp? will it be free?
mobile mail isnt free i know that, and it uses too much battery anyway.

Not if you change the smtp setting it won't.

You don't know that at all, mobile mail is completely free when used on
an X-Series account. It is power hungry though, that much you did get right.

No smtp's are open these days, if you dont use three's then youll need auth'd smtp from
somewhere else.

coulda sworn i read it was £1 per meg in a letter from 3.
so, using smtp.three.co.uk gets me billed..ill have to use gmail then.

Okay, when I said change you smtp settings, I meant to something other
that smtp.three.co.uk. Preferably to whatever settings your ISP provider
gave you, then you'll have access to your personal home e-mail on the
move. Technically it's not free because you pay your ISP, but it doesn't
cost you any extra.

Well I've been using it a lot on my X-Series for the last couple of
months and not been charged a penny.

> so, using smtp.three.co.uk gets me billed..ill have to use gmail then.

Yes, smtp.three.co.uk will cost you, which does seem a bit odd to me
considering pretty much everything else in included in an X-Series
tariff. That's the way it is though, the other option is to use Yahoo!
Mail which is also free on the X-Series.

I have an smtp server (from www.1and1.co.uk) I can access from anywhere
as it requires authentication to use. I forgot that for most people
that will not apply.

gmail's also requires auth, but funnily enough mobilemail works with it.

Ditch mobile mail and just use the built-in email client or the YahooGo
mail.

I've still got a O2 account, so can use smtp.o2.co.uk for outgoing mail.
Also have a freeuk.com, yahoo and gmail account which work as well.

I've started to use the yahooGo for my email, I've got my ISP mail
forwarding them to it. Means I'm notified when I have a message. Seems to be
working fine now, had a few problems the other week, but think that was 3
itself.

If I need to reply to any email from YahooGO (Don't want *@yahoo.co.uk in my
reply) I've setup a account in the built-in email client for yahoo, with the
retreival settings at 5 messages, then I have the outgoing server reply
email set as my ISP mail address.

I had problems using YahooGo for mail forwarding, it was always
delivered as an attachment. I checked all the settings on my mail
forwarding but couldn't figure it out.

Sorry can't help you, but why not email yahoo, I had a problem with one
email not being displayed correctly (Error message and always said I had 1
unread email) and they sorted it out next day. Can't remember where the
online form is, but check the help section.

nick was thinking very hard :

Mobilemail is free, in that you do not pay to receive mail. what you
are paying for is using 3's SMTP server when sending. You need to find
another. You could set up your own domain name at www.oneandone.co.uk
and get authenticated SMTP for around £9 per year.

Can you get it on a 12 month contract ?
