anyone has had experience of their mobile networks, i am wondering how
much it will cost for a local sim and how easy are the to acquire?

I'm on O2 on a normal contract, and have mainly stayed in the Toronto /
Niagara area while i've been over there without any connection problems.
You might find that a PAYG sim from the UK won't work over there, as
most of the UK providers don't have cross-charging arrangements in place
with local providers over there.

I don't know how you'll get on acquiring a sim on its own, as PAYG was
almost non-existant over there (mainly pushing contracts) - things might
be changing a bit, as a quick glance to Rogers came up with this:

Try googling for "canada prepaid sim" - seems to get quite a few hits...

I think there is only one GSM operator, Rogers, in Canada now, but they
sell under two brands:

    http://www.rogers.ca
    http://www.fido.ca

I've never bought service from them (I now have a USA contract phone that
roams in Canada at no additional charge) but I see Rogers stores all over
the place so I can't imagine it is difficult to purchase a SIM.

The only other caveat I know of is that, while a 1900 MHz only phone
will work fine in Canada if you'll be sticking to the cities, you
really should use a phone that also supports 850 MHz if you'll be spending
a lot of time in rural areas.

Just pop into a local Rogers and get a PAYG sim, worked OK on my Samsung
triband in both city & country after a bit of tweaking. Seems to work
everywhere too even in the more desolate areas (plenty of them in Canada).

You'll find one in a shopping mall near you somewhere!
