I won a quiz on a quiz machine in a pub and submitted my mobile
number. They sent me a text telling me to text my address to 07900
695 615 to claim my prize.
The number looks innocuous by I thought I'd check here first: can
they charge me ridiculous amounts of money for that text, or
otherwise scam me?

Not really from that number is it's just a regular mobile
number.
However, if you want to be super safe send it from a pay
as you go sim card that only has £1 credit on it.

07900 is a standard vodafone prefix, no premium rates possible on this
one.

The number looks ok, but check they didn't rip you off for that incoming
text.

Our local radio station uses a number similar to this (starting 07870) - but
if you send them a text
they send you back a msg that costs 25p

I've seen small print alongside other normal mobile number indicating
there's a premium rate charge attached to sending messages to the
number.
I think 'short codes' are just that: a short code. They are 4 or 5
digits instead of the usual 11.
Interestingly, some 'short codes' are not premium rate. IIRC BBC News,
for example, use one which is supposed to be charged at normal SMS
rates. However the mobile operators don't appear to take messages sent
to these numbers out of inclusive text bundles.
