Is there a list of bad characters to use on SMS?

I tried some experiments sending using 18185's cheap SMS web page and
receiving on a Nokia 6300:

(a) A pair of angle brackets in the message closed the sending window
and asked me to log in again to 18185!

(b) If I try the following then one pair of special characters (or maybe
a combination of two pairs) results in nothing happening.
----- START ------
hi there [XX] hi there {XX} hi there *XX* hi there \XX\ hi there .XX. hi
there ~XX~ hi there #XX#
----- END -----

My old Dutch phone used to hang whenever I tried to type an sms with
certain characters in it. I can't remember the exact combination but
it was a string of letters not uncommon in Dutch names.
