Yep - all fine.  But then I reflashed to generic Nokia software (v 12 at
the moment).  I think it was OK with the orange customised software though.

Does this mean that the N95 returns to its standard form so that the
voip software works along with any other features that Orange has
disabled? I have considerd an N95 but wouldn't in my wildest dreams
get one from a company that has disabled the very functions that I am
buying it for. Unless one is stupid one doesn't spend good money on an
item that doesn't do what it is supposed to do so Orange has been a no
go area for me in regard  to the N95.

Hi there,

I too have an Orange N95.  I removed all the orange software from it and
restored it back to the generic software.

I cant exactly remember which programs were removed but now I can use voip
via truphone.

The firmware updates the phone to the latest version. v12.0.013.  (that's
what I have) but the latest v20 out for testing.  So wont be long until all
n95 unbranded users will be using that.

When you use nokias own firmware and updates, you'll find much more software
options as to orange limited options.  I've been using mine since Orange
started shipping them and I haven't had much problems...  I use the camera a
lot for video and its great but I must admit its not as good as my n93.  The
GPS is also good thanks to the firmware update.  Whats going to be a big
thing this year is application developments for the nokia n95 accelerometer.
I hope someone can come up with a program so I can use it with my wii.

Only thing I can think off is orange line 2 may  or may not work.

I hope I have helped you in some way

Is this change from Orange to Generic easy?
Do I just download it and install? or is it more tricky with certain cables
needed and special software?
Thanks

I used this guide to debrand my N95 on 3.  Dead easy, using the standard
cable from the box.
Total time was about 30 mins, but 29 mins of that was the 113MB download to
rebrand it!

Which guide?

Thanks for all the comments guys.
I would want to use an N95 with Voxalot. That way I can choose any
carriers I wish for incoming and outgoing calls. So, for that, I want
the SIP voip client to be fully operational.

Thank you for th elink Mike. 'Duh' you may but I can't see any
reference to that link in this thread so, short of possessing some
mystical powers, how else would I know?

The phones built-in VoIP capability and the WLAN are not in any way
related.

On Orange-branded Nokia N95 the in-built SIP functionality is disabled.
The WLAN is not affected in any way by this.

You can get 3rd party SIP clients (eg Truphone) to work without issue.

The official reason it was disabled was because it was feared that
customers who are not as knowledgeable as you might see "internet call"
in their menu and happily dial-away without realising the data charge
implications.

I don't believe that for one second! France telecom are just worried about
losing call revenue, so cripple the phone, and remove one of the main
features!

10 out of 10 for 0-Range to think of that for a reason!

Believe it if you like, that was the reason cited.

If people got carried away with "internet call" and generated higher
bills because of data charges then more money would have made, would it
not?

And we all know that the official company line isn't dressed up with PR
spin. Everything a company says is entirely true, honest and moral.

Depends if people used their WLAN or 3G Connection.

Peopel who dint' know what "internet call" was would probably not know
what WLAN was either.

People who didn't know what internet call was, probably wouldn't be able
to set up their connectivity details and sip server in order to be
charged extortionate amounts for 3G usage.

Perhaps you have some personal first hand information on people who know
SIP but dont know WLAN? People who know "Internet Call" but dont know 3G
and never use any other bit of the internet on their 3G phones to never
have any knowledge of being charged for internet usage.

It's PR spin. It's bullshit a mile off.

That's an interesting point, I had not considered that.

A colleague asked me for help setting up his Nokia on our Asterisk server,
and the guide I sent him [for the SIP client bit] contained some 20 screen
shots.

No I don't, not for one second! This is PR crap!

Yes, it would.... If it were to happen.............. I think *most* Orange
users would work out that calls would incur data charges if not made over
wifi. Then again, these same users are quite happy to pay for sms delivery
reports!
Skype calls made via Orange would cost the earth with O's gold plated
'Orange World'  !!!

If the data charges on Orange weren't so extortionate it wouldn't be a
problem.

Hello,

does anyone know how to uninstall Orange software from N95?

It is now working like an icon bar on the desktop. I would like to have
only the original Nokia applications on the phone, no wise not fully
compatible orange colour extras.

Thanks for any help!

David
