My family has two mobile phones, bought at the same time, same model phone,
on same tariff with T-Mobile yet one has good signal strength and the other
not. Even when tested together, in the same room big difference. My daughter
who owns the poor one called T-mobile and they said nothing they could do
for the poor signal one and she even went in T-Mobile shop and again they
said could no nothing.
Any thoughts?

Yes, why do you need to post that sort of thing to a newsgroup? How will
posting help to sort the problem out? Think for a few minutes!
One phone is either faulty or just rubbish.

Or trying to use a 3G signal in an area that doesn't have a good 3G signal?
Or the other way around?
Gareth.

Are they 3G phones? if so is one using 3G and the other GSM only? If
so try changing that setting and see if it makes any difference.

It's entirely possible that you are seeing an accurate reflection of the
received signal strength. This does fluctuate as the network manages
traffic and should not be a cause for concern.

Thanks to those who came back with sensible tips which I will look at when I
can get the two phones in my hands at the same time. As I said the mystery
was both mobiles, in the same room, at the same time performed very
differently. However I will compare settings.

It's possible for a phone to be damaged without any physical trauma (like
being dropped). This article demonstrates the effect of being kept in a
pocket with jingling change which could damage the radio and reduce
sensitivity:
