What do you actually pay for?

I have downloaded the maps via Wi-Fi and used the GPS to monitor my
movements (do i have to pay when the satnav gets a lock)
or do i only pay when i actually ask for directions?
I thought just viewing maps and using the GPS for my current location were
free

Reason for asking was someone said you get charged when phone gets the sat
lock?

Cheers

Depends on the software you are using. There is no charge for using GPS and
getting info from the satellites, as long as you've downloaded the maps and
they don't download 'on the fly' then you won't get any extra costs.

There is a way to be sure, take the SIM card out and then see if it still
works. There's no way for it to rack up any charges for you without the SIM.

Mine won't boot up without a valid sim card.

Use of the N95 gps itself doesn't incur any data charges. You can use  the
.Nokia Tracker gps app (doesn't do street mapping) without any data charges.

The N95 can use network info (presumably based on which cell you are
connected to) to assist the gps location finding, not sure if there are any
data charges involved in that, but I doubt it.

If you want to use the Nokia maps application, then you will pay data
charges to download the map info, but you can use their Map Loader
application to pre-load the maps to your phone.  I believe that you pay
Nokia a subscription if you want voice navigation and tracking on the Nokia
maps, so they are pretty useless IMO. A free solution which includes voice
navigation is www.nav4all.com - again all you pay is data for the map
download.  IMO you really need an unlimited data plan (e.g. Tmobile's
WebnWalk or Three' internet add-on ) to make the best of this phone
