Me again...
Further to my John Lewis question earlier, having done a bit more research,
I'm thinking of going for the Nokia 6300. John Lewis sell it as a PAYG on
the T-Mobile network which raises a couple of questions:
1: If I buy a T-Mobile PAYG phone, should I be able to use a Virgin Mobile
SIM in it without getting it unlocked? I know Virgin use the T-Mobile
network, but not sure how the network locking works
2: Does anyone know if the Nokia 6300 on T-Mobile PAYG has had the firmware
'branded' (messed up) by T-Mobile, or is it pretty much as Nokia intended
it?
2b: If it IS 'branded' then is it possible(easy?) to return it to its
natural state?
Oh and one other question, I understand the 6300 has a 2.5mm jack for the
headphones and comes with special headphones, can I just buy an
adaptor(2.5->3.5mm) and my own pair, or is the Nokia headset specially
wired? Obviously I'll lose the handfree facility that the bundled headphones
have, unless I can find an adaptor with a built in mike... Will the radio
still work with 3rd party headphones and an adaptor though?
Thanks.

T Mobile don't GID1 sim lock their phones, so you can use any T Mobile
virtual like Virgin in it, whereas Virgin Do GID1 lock and can't.
Although I would have it both unlocked, and if needed firmware factory reset

Is that something I could do myself, or is it a 'local phone shop' job?

The de-branding is really simple and can be done yourself, just need a
few programmes- nokia service suite (NSS) available if you search the
web and the nokia software updater available from the nokia website.
As for the unlocking i'm not sure.

Yes, you can use an adaptor with your own headphones.

I believe the Nokia unit supplied is also the aerial for the radio, so
the radio "might" not work very well if you use different headphones?
