Handset for Japan use?

Hi,

I occasionally travel to Japan, and my BB 8100 won't work there (not
3G). I don't want to replace my BB, so I was thinking about getting a
second handset that will work there, but will also act as a spare
phone for when the Pearl has a special day (which it often does) or
breaks alltogether, wherever else I am in the world.

I'm on Vodafone UK, and would prefere a handset that uses mini USB to
charge, as that's what everything else I travel with uses (Nokia
haven't seen the light yet by any chance have they?!). <£100 if
possible?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Tom,

One recent handset I can think of is the Motorola V3X. That is 3G/UMTS
compatible so it'll work in japan and will charge by mini USB. As it's
not a current handset you should be able to pick one up quite cheaply.

I can second this one. I have a V3xx (same phone but with higher speed
HSDPA) which I got in Hong Kong for about US$100. It works well, and
also makes a fine modem for 3G Internet service on your laptop.

Not really. Of the V series I know of only the V3x(x), the V6 Maxx and
the V9 which have support for UMTS (though I don't really keep track of
Motorola's models), and I heard somewhere that the newest Motorola
phones (the V9?) are beginning to use micro USB connectors rather than
mini USB connectors.

Of these only the V3x is likely to be found for cheap. The others
are current handsets.
