Orange's Unlocking Policy

Anyone know what Orange's official policy on unlocking their phones is?
I want to buy a SE 610i on Orange, but get it unlocked straight away and use
it with my existing Virgin Mobile SIM.
Will Orange unlock it for me? I assume they will probably charge me unless I
buy a certain amount of credit. Does anyone know what this charge is, and
how much credit I'd need to buy to offset it?

Many thanks,

I understand that Orange always charge for unlocks - approx £20.  If
you've got a contract phone, they may also refuse, or insist that you
pay the remainder of your contact up-front before unlocking.  Certainly
that's the response I've seen on here etc.

Orange haven't required up-front payment of the remainder of the contract
for over 18 months, unlocks cost 20 quid.

I consider it a form of extortion to charge for unlocking once a contract
has run its course. I have less of an issue with a charge while still in
contract though.

I can't see why they charge you if you have a contract as you are committed
to keep paying them for the minimum term whether you continue to use their
network or not.
I CAN understand them charging you to unlock a PAYG handset, though. However
I think they should unlock it for free once you've spent more than a certain
amount with them (say £100). Having said that, do you get much of a discount
on the actual retail value of the phone when you buy PAYG, or are you paying
close to the SIM Free price anyway...?

But what is the benefit of using Orange to unlock your phone when the
going rate on the High Street is £5.  It is not illegal to have the
phone unlocked by a third party although it might affect the
guarantee.

No benefit of using Orange at all, slower more expensive, and more
difficult... however, at the time of asking, I couldn't get a confirmed
answer that it was unlockable on the High Street. (My understanding is that
certain phones cannot be unlocked by shops or market stalls, only by the
network operators.) I just wanted to be sure I would have some way of
unlocking if before I bought it, going via Orange was the last resort...
As it happened, I got it unlocked at a phone stall on the market, though I
couldn't find anywhere that'd do it for anything like as cheap as a fiver.
In the end, it cost me 15 quid, and I got him the throw in de-branding and
flashing to the latest SE firmware as well...

I just had an Orange phone unlocked.
The man said "You have been with us for more than 3-months so that will
be OK" (or something along those lines). It cost £20 (added to bill). It
took a few days for them to email me the unlock code.
So maybe they do not unlock until you have had the phone for 3-months?

It's a £20 fee regardless of anything else. You will have to register
the handset with your personal details to get it unlocked. When you buy
the phone in the first place you will probably need to buy credit as
well, and the unlocking code could take several days to arrive.

Thanks for that. The shop I'm planning to get it from sells the phone at a
specific price, no mention of having to buy credit, though I'm not sure if
their quoted price includes 5-10 quids worth...(?)
Having to wait a few days is no problem, I can continue to use my old phone
until the code turns up.

I'm still hoping that I'll be able to get it unlocked for less money at the
local independant phone shop, but I can't get a definite answer from
anywhere as to whether they will be able to do it or if it is only Orange
that can sort me out...

.... plus it's needs to be registered with Orange for 3 months before
they'll give an unlock code now. No leeway on this.

Thanks.
Hopefully I'll be able to get it done at the local unlocking shop, but at
least I know that worst case, I can get it done by Orange for 20quid after 3
months. If necessary, I'll just keep using my old phone in the meantime...

That, however, is illegal.  I have had no problem with getting a phone
unlocked as soon as I have registered it. Sometimes they ask why? To
make it easier for them I sometimes say that I am about to go abroad and
want to use a local SIM.  Once or twice I've had CSAs saying the phone
belongs to Orange. I then say "Does that mean Orange relinquishes its
exemption from the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1948" and they then change
their minds.

It is because the operators don't own the phones that they don't need to
have each phone individually licenced and managed.

Thanks to everyone for their input on this.
In the end, I bought a phone and took it to a stall on the market, where he
unlocked it and de-branded it for £15.
Now, all I've got to do is work out a way of removing the little 'Orange'
logo printed below the keypad...  :-)

If it bothers you that much (never understood why) then stick a little
label of your own over it, with such info as what number to call if it's
found (there are honest people out there, I've had phones returned by just
this means..!)

Doesn't really bother me all that much at all. (Hence the smiley),  it just
irritates me at a very minor level that it has the logo even though the
phone no longer has anything to do with Orange and that I've paid MY money
to walk around carrying an advert for THEIR product(and yes I know this
applies to pretty much any branded item that you buy).

To be honest, it's only a tiny logo and actually looks Ok as the keyboard
has a kind of orange(with a small 'o') theme going on anyway.

Tried that...

By the way, anyone want to buy a SE 610i Special Edition.
It looks just like the standard model, but it's about 1cm shorter, and has
easy access to the internal circuitry...
