Recommendations for data use in Sweden

chris - 30 Jan 2008 21:56 GMT I've booked a self-catering holiday in Sweden, but unfortunately there is no Net access in the house. I currently have the T-Mobile USB modem which I could use, but £7.50/MB is horrendous for any serious use (I like to use the Web to search for things to do, etc, while away).
Is there a possibility of getting a PAYG SIM over there? If so, can I get the USB modem unlocked (I've only had it a couple of months)? Any other suggestions?

I was going to suggest a 3 UK SIM, since Sweden is a 3-Like-Home country and if you use their network in Sweden data use (and voice calls and text messages) should be at no additional cost beyond the UK price. I notice Sweden is only available with contract, and not PAYG, 3 service, however, so never mind.
A 3G phone tethered to the laptop will probably work almost as well as the modem, and might make more sense to unlock if you have one.

Yes, I was just looking at that with high hopes, but I knew there must be a catch somewhere! I don't particularly want to take out a contract.

I have an E61 also on T-Mobile. I was thinking of getting it unlocked anyway. It's OK at a push for the Web, but I'd prefer the laptop.
One question: I was previously using their datacard. Can I still get it unlocked, even though I cancelled that contract?

I don't know for the datacard, but yesterday I was googling unlocking for the Huawei E220 USB modem (the 'bar of soap' used by Vodafone, 3, T-Mobile etc). It sounds like there's a EUR15 self-unlocking solution (from http://www.kulankendi.com/ ), so it might be feasible to unlock your existing USB modem without network help.

[quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > > Theo Thanks. I'll take a look. I spoke to T-Mobile this evening to request my E61 be unlocked. I asked about both the Option datacard and the E220. He said it was the first he'd ever been asked about it, and had to disappear to make enquiries. Came back with no known answer!
'3' offer a £10/month which I might think about. They also talk about a £0/month option, yet I see no way of ordering it!

Theo Markettos - 31 Jan 2008 23:37 GMT > '3' offer a ?10/month which I might think about. They also talk about a > ?0/month option, yet I see no way of ordering it! Is that the PAYG tariff? Is that a way of saying that you pay a tenner for a month (or 30 days or whatever) if you want it, and don't pay if you don't want it?

I'm interested in getting a PAYG USB modem, but the shops in Manchester have been out of them the last few days...

You don't need a modem just a 3G dataphone
I'm using 3 PAYG internet (packet data) unlimited 30 days (2gb download limit) for 5quid a month, on an unlocked Orange Nokia 6630 with DKU2 usb datalead. Using Nokia PC suite 6.35 (which gives me one button connection) on Windows XP laptop
Gives me about a 50kbs connection, about the same as old 56k dial up. Free SMTP email if you use other than 3mail, I'm using googlemail. and for Usenet groups I'm using free aioe.cjb.net newsserver to send this.
If I went over to 3 broadband, I should get about 10 times faster connection using the same set up, but costing a minimum of 10quid, for 1gb download
If i used a HSDPA phone like a Nokia 6120 on a HSDPA enabled 3.5G cell (not many out yet) speed should be maybe 5 times faster than that
3 coverage here in Watford is very good, don't think any 3 cells here are HSDPA yet

I don't really need a phone though- all I'm looking for is an alternative to BT Openzone, for which I'm paying £6 a month already. 3 would seem to have a good (and more flexible) alternative on the £10 plan. I don't think I'd have a problem with the 1GB limit- but sometimes I want to send things quickly. I'm just interested to know how reliable the service is- the coverage in the areas I'd use it would seem good.

If you look at http:// www.three.co.uk/personal/products_services_/mobile_broadband_/detail.omp you'll see "Broadband Casual" under "Pay Monthly" - 0 GB allowance, £0/ month, and £1.00/GB "out of bundle charge - £1.00/MB" but there's no "By Now" link, and it doesn't appear in http://threestore.three.co.uk/ broadband/?id=1201
Sounds too good to be true. I also notice that they sell a SIM for £4.95 (free from most others), but it doesn't give you data access if you're not using a 3 phone. Makes me wonder if getting a PAYG SIM in Sweden would actually give me data access.

I think that's a way of saying that if you don't opt for a bundle you'll be charged GBP1/MB. In other words it's just debited from your PAYG balance as you use data - you don't need to buy anything in advance.
> Sounds too good to be true. Really? How do you read the above? A pound per MB doesn't sound terribly good value to me - OK, better than other networks at 4 quid/MB, but not much better.

Makes me > wonder if getting a PAYG SIM in Sweden would actually give me data access. I'm puzzled about 3G SIMs. On eBay there seem to be people selling 'Three SIMs', 'Three data SIMs' and 'Three HSDPA SIMs'. Is there a difference in the SIM, or is this just FUD? I did wonder if Three don't give out free SIMs because people who aren't paying attention will use them in their 2G phone and cost them a fortune in charges from their 2G partner network.
Do you have a reference where they say their SIMs don't give access to data unless you're on a Three phone? I can understand if they don't do Skype unless they're on a Three Skypephone (but maybe someone has knocked up a Java applet to do the same as the Skype button on these phones?).
The forum at: http://www.prepaidgsm.net/ has been a good place to find out about the best PAYG tariffs on obscure foreign operators, so might be worth asking there for Sweden.

In the context of no monthly payments, for occasional use. However, as the link I gave above makes no mention of how much they charge for the modem on this tariff (if it exists - certainly not available in their shops)

I agree that I don't quite understand that, but http://www.three.co.uk/ personal/price_plans_/pay_as_you_go_/pickadeal_simonly.omp says "To access any of our content or 3G services, you'll need to use this SIM in a 3 mobile. If you use another mobile you'll have access to voice and text services only."
> The forum at: > http://www.prepaidgsm.net/ > has been a good place to find out about the best PAYG tariffs on obscure > foreign operators, so might be worth asking there for Sweden. I looked before, but again the 'no data service' seemed to apply for all the 'international' SIMs mentioned, but I'll take another look.

50quid if you're a student and apply before 29th Feb: http://www.three.co.uk/personal/products_services_/mobile_broadband_/students.omp for the student offer, which is definitely available in shops. Shop is the only way to get a modem on the student offer unless you happen to be where they have their roadshows. So I'd be surprised if it's not available in shops for everyone else.

(Or does it mean a 3G mobile, not a Three-branded mobile?)

> I looked before, but again the 'no data service' seemed to apply for all > the 'international' SIMs mentioned, but I'll take another look. The listings are fairly basic, so if you want anything complicated I'd ask on the forum (if no-one here can advise). It might be something like a special SIM or bundle you have to buy, or signup for a contract then cancel it, or something like that which isn't as simple as just picking the right network.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did separately find a SIM available in Sweden at http://www.tre.se/templates/ConfirmPage.aspx?id=27148 but I doubt if they will process my order once they see I'm in the UK (it didn't ask for any payment, so not sure how that would be taken),

As it happens, I just discovered Kulan-Kendi also and used them yesterday to unlock my Huawei E220. It worked OK, but only after I had updated the firmware to a version that KK expected to see. EUR15 well spent.
