Orange PAYG SIMS's locked to handset?

Is it possible to use an old Orange SIM (circa 5 years) with a new
Orange PAYG handset and just ignore the new, as yet unused SIM ?

The user (not me and I'm doing this remotely!) keeps getting asked for
a security code.  12345 doesn't work,  yet when the old SIM is moved
back to the old handset it works fine without asking for any security
code.

Yes you can; pay as you go and contract sim cards can be used in any
orange phone.

A security code is a handset code; if it has not been changed the
default should be in the manual somewhere.

A PIN code is based on the sim card so, if the sim pin is active,
placing the old sim in the new phone would require the old sim cards
pin etc

Have you tried 0000?

Yes. I've had the same orange PAYG SIM for at least 8 years and more like 10
and I just buy a new handset when I fancy one and bin the SIM that came in
the box

If you call Orange and let them know you've upgraded they'll transfer
your credit, tariff, and number to that new SIM in the box and give you
up to £100 upgrade reward for doing so.  Plus you get a nice new SIM
with a higher capacity memory and Orange Plus for onscreen balance etc
which an 8 year old SIM probably won't have.  Bear it in mind for next
time?

Good advice.  I had a SIM switch a couple of years ago and found
that the new one isn't just more powerful, but boots up faster and
-- counterintuitively -- seems to put less strain on the battery.

Thanks, that's exactly what we've done, nowhere near 100 quid credit
though :)

An update:

The new phone  (Nokia 1110i) and SIM are definitely "new" UK stock and
were in a Nokia box with an Orange security seal.

Before contacting Orange I discovered that:

My Orange contract SIM works in the other users old Orange PAYG
(Motorola 3788e) and vice versa without a problem (as expected)

But, my Orange contract SIM in their new phone doesn't work. After
power on it asks for a *security* code (not a pin code)  This code is
not 12345 or 00000 or 0000.   Also their old PAYG SIM in their new
phone also asks for a security code in an identical manner. I know
what my pin is, I disabled it whilst it was in my phone (Nokia 6210)
and got exactly the same results when trying my Orange Contract SIM in
the new phone.

We then contacted Orange, got the old PAYG Orange number/account
transferred to the new SIM and it immediately worked in the new phone

But despite this,  the new SIM *only* works in that particular phone,
it won't work in my phone  or their old PAYG phone - The phones don't
even recognise the SIM.  My Orange contract SIM still won't work in
their new phone as it is still requesting a security code.

I'm still as confused as hell as to why!

Any explanations?
