I was in a Carphone Warehouse today on the quest for a new phone. (See my
post on 31/1) Everything I've read about the SE K800i says buy it but I just
can't warm to it. The buttons are much too close together and the lens cover
for the camera looks like an afterthought that I'll break off in the first
week.
Anyway here's the point of this post, Carphone Warehouse is selling K800i's
PAYG for £70 (Voda) and £80 (o2 & Orange) You'll get £10 of that price if
you take in an old phone and charger. The bit that intrigues me was the
sales person says the phones are supplied with "No" SIM locks and gereric
software on the phone (IE: No telecoms company firmware changes) If this is
true then thats a massive bargain IMO. Has anyone purchased a PAYG phone
from CPH and can confirm this is true?
I wanted to buy one but couldn't bring myself to buy a phone I don't really
like, against my better judgement I've bought a K750i on ebay tonight. Time
will tell if that was the right thing to do!

certainly whenever i've bought from their web sites - eg e2save etc, they
have been unlocked.
apart from which, if they say they are unlocked it would have to be true -
why would they make such an obvious lie that would lead to you returning the
phone?
the locked ones usually have the phone company logo on them somewhere.

Its just that o2 & Voda sell the same phone SIM locked and with their own
firmware for £100-£80. If you browse through the various forums it seems to
be all folk do is look for ways to unlock them. Maybe they are all ex
contract phones in that case.

I upgraded from the 750i to the 800i at cpw and yes it is unlocked on o2
payg. The 900i is a far better phone than the 750i the 750i lens cover
switch inside broke within a month.

No doubt it is a better phone in virtually every department, however I don't
like the button layout and the lens cover on the 800. The 750 fulfills my
pretty limited needs, I'll just have to hope the lens cover switch isn't a
major problem. Googling reveals that 750s and 800s can suffer the same
problem.

If CPW can they will sell unlocked GSM stock phones as it makes
stock keeping easier for them.
Orange won't let them sell GSM stock, and most Smartphones when given
custom firmware are also branded and SP network locked.

Avoiding the K800i was a good idea , but the older K750i wasn't the best
choice.
You should have got a K770i on Orange PAYG from play.com instead.
It's a much nice phone and comes unlocked and unbranded.
