O2 GPRS

I'm on an O2 Pay & Go SIMM card. I've never used WAP/GPRS before but decided
to have a try last night. I downloaded the auto settings for my phone (SE
K750i) which where texted from the O2 website and accepted by my phone. No
success getting online with GPRS sadly.

This morning I managed to get online using O2 WAP GSM dial up but it was
costing me something like 10-12p per min.

Called into an O2 retail outlet today and the assisstant checked and
announced my SIMM was not GPRS enabled, he gave me an O2 number to ring
which I did and the girl said she would do it within 24hrs and ring me
tomorrow. She agreed that dial up was very expensive. Later this afternoon
the GPRS settings must have taken effect because it started to work. However
its still costing 10-12p per min.

So what is it supposed to cost on Pay and Go? I'm darned if I can figure it
out from their website.

Also what is O2 active (Or similiar)? the assistant in the retail shop
mentioned it was cheaper if you browsed through O2's own stuff.

TIA

Hi,

go to wap.o2.co.uk for o2 active - i'm not sure that it is cheaper "if you
browsed through O2's own stuff"

O2 PAYG data is charged at £3 per MB (expensive!). You can get a bolt-on for
a decent amount of data for £7.50 a month.

Thanks for the reply Ian, it's finally got through to me that its not time
connected but bytes downloaded that is paid for. An expensive way to check
for footie scores! Are there any text only sports results sites?

Another question then, a work friend has just purchased from the "3" network
a 3G modem (Apporox £100) and a PAYG simm for it at £10 per month for 1GB or
£15 for 3GB. He has to top up at least £10 each month and any unused
download bandwidth is lost at the end of the month. The simm provided can be
topped up for voice and 3G seperately.

So my question is this, rather than carry a phone, modem and laptop is it
possible to use the phone as a modem and have everything displayed on the
laptop? That way he would only need to carry a phone and a laptop and for
quick online checks he could just use the phone therefore not needing to
start his laptop.

Yes. I sent a friend up with a 3PAYG sim which he put in his out of contract
O2 N95 and he uses it for web surfing on the mobile and also as a modem at
home with his laptop.
