OK, I've just received the unlocking code for my T-Mobile E61. I've found
various u.t.m discussion about this, but none specific to the E61. I
cannot get the pw entries to work: all I end up with is #*******, no
matter how slowly/quickly I press the keys, so what's the secret?

Also, the letter from T-Mobile says to do it with the SIM installed, yet
many of the previous messages I've seen have said to do it with the SIM
removed. What's the difference?

Dont think it matters whether you have your t-mobile sim, no sim or
another network's sim inserted.  In the past i've tended to do it with
the phone switched on with the sim card belonging to the locked
network inserted.  The characters then enter as if dialling a phone
number.

Even when switched on you cant get a +, p, or w character by pressing
the * key?

I eventually sorted it after further Web searches. As the E61 has a
qwerty keyboard then you simply enter the alpha characters from the
keyboard. I did wonder if this was the case, but didn't want to risk it
until I was sure. Turns out that T-Mobile sent the wrong version of the
letter. I called to say that the wording should reflect the type of
phone, and they said that they have different versions of the letter, but
apologised for sending the wrong one. The unlocking worked first time, so
problem solved!
