I've decided just to go for it and move from O2 Online (old Genie contract
tariff) to Orange Square Deal. I particularly like that fact the I can get a
calling card from a provider such as Tiscali and get landline calls for
2p/min, and use my cross-network minutes for mobiles.

I just called up O2 to get my PAC, and I was expecting the worse, but they
were actually very helpful and it was only a 5 minute call. Although I do
not have my PAC yet, I have been told that my request has been submitted to
the cancellations department and that they will be in contact within the
next few days, so fingers crossed!

I just hope I've made the right decision changing to Orange as I will not be
able to get this O2 contract again :-p

I could, but I want to keep the number, and also, I doubt anyone would
really want to buy it!
