Watch out if you've more than one phone..!

Ivor Jones - 28 Feb 2008 18:50 GMT I heard a report on local radio the other day that police in the West Midlands are asking for people to inform on those that have several mobile phones, on the rather flimsy IMHO grounds that terrorists and other criminals use multiple phones to avoid detection.
So how is that going to affect those of us that legitimately have several..? Or who use multiple networks to get the best deals..?
For example, I have five active numbers..! For anyone remotely interested, they are: one for normal personal use, one for work, one with the original Orange Out Here pack on for the occasional SMS (I don't send many), one emergency spare in the car glovebox and last but not least an old Cellnet SIM that I hang onto purely because it has a memorable number that I might want to sell one day.
I think I'd better turn myself in now..!

If you add up the subscriber numbers each of the five carriers report for the UK you end up with a total over 70 million in a country with only 60 million residents (some of whom are presumably too small to carry a mobile phone).
I don't think you are alone, and I suspect the police in the West Midlands might end up being pretty busy. There are apparently a lot of terrorists and other criminals.

I carry a personal mobile and a work one as well , but there are several extra numbers registered to me from when I've bought PAYG handsets to replace faulty phones either for me or other people.
Highly suspect...

There was some case in America a couple of years where 2 or 3 men who happened to be Muslims were persecuted by the authorities for buying 50 or 100 phones and transporting them to sell to a dealer somewhere else
Mind you, the original cheap roaming SIM from Swisscom was dropped when it appeared that some of them were in use in rather dodgy areas of the Middle East
Somewhere in on or around this desk are about 10 phones and over 20 SIM cards. If the phones have a secondhand value of only a quid or two, what is the point of selling or throwing them away?
I once surprised the security staff at Schoenefeld airport by having 5 phones, but she didn't object

Unless you are actively using them, what's the point in keeping them? Unless you are an engineer and intend to use them for spare parts or something.

Don't forget, it's the west mids police who arrested a poor chap at gunpoint because some muppet thought his MP3 player "might have been a gun".
The scariest thing was, because he was listening to his music (OK it must have been a bit loud), he didn't hear their order to stop at first. And when he saw them, what's the first thing he did ? Yup - you've got it. He put his hand inside his jacket to switch it off ...
So it's not daft. This ludicrous climate of fear the Government is trying to get us to buy into (no one I know is remotely scared of terrorists. They *are* scared of the government) is going to get more innocent people killed.

I think the police will soon discover that for the most part crime is not actually that well organised... I mean how many criminals do you know with a PBX?

Apologies for missing that earlier post where you explained the phones you had... The only one I don't understand (though I'm not saying it's unreasonable) is why do you need a seperate phone for SMSs? Surely if you don't send many, you can just send them from your 'normal' phone...?
By the way, my previous post should probably have had a :-) somewhere as you seem to have taken it more seriously than it was intended. :-)

: : The only one I don't understand (though I'm not saying : : it's unreasonable) is why do you need a seperate phone : : for SMSs? Surely if you don't send many, you can just : : send them from your 'normal' phone...? Because the SMS phone has the original Orange Out Here pack which gives 5 free SMS a day. For the small number I send, that is more than enough. From my normal network they're 10p each. Ok not a lot given the amount, but free is still cheaper than 10p ;-)
