There are plenty of these services around, but AFAIK all require the
consent of the phone user, so why is it scary..? The really scary system
is one I saw a demo of a few months back (can't remember its name) where a
module containing a SIM card (not a phone, just a data module) is *hidden*
in a vehicle, a bit like the tracker system used by the police. This one
though is on all the time, not just when the car is reported stolen, and
it uses the phone network to give a detailed map on screen of exactly
where the car is located, in real time if necessary. I watched it track a
car down a street, turn left and come past the building we were in,
looking out of the window the car appeared exactly on cue..! It can even
calculate and report your fuel consumption..! This one *is* scary because
if you have a company vehicle you have no idea if your firm has fitted the
thing or not..!
Re. Verilocation or similar though, there's nothing stopping you setting
up an account to track your own phone if you want to, but you'll have to
pay for it..!
