today i recieved a call from the following phone number "0870 181
920", although i answered it, the line went dead and after 3 seconds i
hung up. I did not phone back. after researching the number some
people have said it is a scam number. does that mean because i
answered it, i can get charged? or does anybody know who that company
is?
has anybody ever had calls like this before?

The only type of incoming call you can get charged for[1] is a reverse
charge call, all "warnings" to the contrary are nuisance advice in
themselves.
[1] Unless e.g you're paying for an 0800 number or using diverts, but
then you're paying for all calls, not just dodgy ones.

Try joining the Telephone Preference Service. This cuts down on UK based
sales operations.
Sometimes sales companies will have computers phoning vast amounts of
numbers in sequence. It will only put you through if an operator is
available. It saves the operator sitting dialling numbers.

i have joined tps - that was the first sales call i have had in a long
time - :) - apparently - the number appears to have originated from a
"mobile sales company"
