As far as I know, my wifes' phone has only been switched off perhaps
2-3 times in the last 3 years without any issues.
I've got the same phone, but suspect it has a creeping fault, as
closing the clamshell often reboots it and wants the SIM password

Bit of digging found a couple of mentions of Motorola Razor type phones
packing up after jogging and how they thought it may be connected to
perspiration...(?)
I have to admit it has only stopped when I was wearing it, not when it was
sitting on the shelf, so there might be something in that.

I have a Nokia 6210 permanently switched on and connected to O2.
No problems at all.

No. It should stay connected for months or years at a time. Sounds like
yours has a fault.
