Ric - 28 Aug 2008 23:32 GMT Hi All, Having changed jobs, my work phone has now gone. I want either a contract or PAYG that's cheap and data friendly - I don't make many calls, or use that many texts, but unlimited data is what I'm after. What's out there at the moment? Any recommendations?
Ric

They sometimes do some very silly things - like upgrade my ED50 phone to a RAZR2 V8 (2GB version) for nothing. ;)

They sell worthless insurance you don't need unless you plan to upgrade via the "I've had my phone stolen" trick. Sales people sell you a product or service that earns them the most commission - or that they are told to sell by the managers that month. You will end up leaving with a product that doesn't suit you. My advice is do your own research and shop around for a while first, have a clear idea of what you want nd stick to it. Why would you want 1000minutes and 500 texts for say £40 a month if you would never use them? It would be best to try something like the PAYG service from ASDA. Stop laughing, it's almost better value than Virgin.

Actually, as well as ASDA's offering with data soon to drop to 20p/Mbyte (AVOID Virgin if you want to use data, they charge £5.12/MB) consider Three's option, they let you get a bundle on PAYG for £5 which gives effectively unlimited handset browsing (it's not meant for tethering, but it works, just don't go nuts) and the bundle lasts 30 days.

Brian A - 31 Aug 2008 11:29 GMT >(AVOID Virgin if you want to use data, they charge £5.12/MB) consider That was some time ago. I seem to remember that they sent me notice that they now charge something like 0.2p/KB.That is still £2000/GB though. Unfortunately they don't do blocks of data and that is one of the things that makes them unattractive. I am currently on the Virgin 300/300 tariff for £10/month. Looking at all the tariffs I would thik that '3' PAYG looks to be the best. If I understand it correctly you top up with £10/month and can designate £5 of that to go to 1GB of data. You also get various other services for free.

If you go transfer your existing mobile number to a new Three SIM card you qualify for £10 of FREE CREDIT!! (That free £10 credit must be used within the first month it's offered by the way - it can be spent on anything - a £5 Internet Monthly bundle for example).

According to http://www.virginmobile.com/vm/genericContent.do?contentId=payasyougo.tariff.how doi.sm131 and http://www.virginmobile.com/vm/genericContent.do?contentId=paymonthly.ourTariff. standardcharges.shop.sm142
it's still 0.5p/Kbyte (£5.12/Mbyte).
I see they've sneaked the cross-net rate up from 35p/min to 40p/min, and cross-net SMS from 10p to 12p per text. I don't recall getting any notification of that in any recent bill (I'm on PAYG by Direct Debit).

For £20 you can get unlimited (1Gb) data, 600 mins and 1000 texts with O2 Simplicity (special offer until end of September).
There are probably others who know more and will chip in...

I want either a [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] >For £20 you can get unlimited (1Gb) data, 600 mins and 1000 texts >with O2 Simplicity (special offer until end of September). I think the deals are £15 or £20 as a sim-only contract - the web bolt-on is £7.50, but is included in the £20 deal, so you'd be bonkers to not take it!
And I'm looking at moving over to this when my contract ends (October but the chap in the local shop reckons they'll extend the deal)
Can't say I've had any problems connection for email when I'm using my current O2 system - it would surprise me if they had a separate data network (or set of firewalls) for another producy, but you never know with O2 ... I guess it depends on it costing them less to implement it than they'd gain from forcing punters to use their own systems...
O2 annoyances: Using the word "unlimitd" when it's clearly not. Telling me I can't connect my Nokia E90 to a laptop - when the E90 on it's own is just as capable of downloading GB of data when running google maps or downloading all the spam I get, or uploading photos and videos I shoot with it....

The shop says the offer is limited to end September but I believe the website now says new lower price. It can be cancelled on 30 days notice so if my phone gives up or I find a better deal I can do something else.

Indeed - and as I'm currently with O2 on a £35 pcm contract, getting stung for data charges on-top, then anything less for me will be a bonus... (My wife just did the same on Orange - go from 18 month contract to monthly SIM only - dropped from £30 to £10 for her...
Quite an intersting turn of events I think - we've looked after the phones, so have no isses about running them for another year or so, so why should be continue to pay a premium once the mobile co. has had it's slice of the initial phone costs? (and we're not modern yoof, so don't need the latest trendy handset every 6 months either ;-)
My wife plans to go back on a year/18 month contract in about a years time when her current phone really does get to be a bit old compared to the next gen... And I'll probably do the same.

I want either a [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > > Al Excuse me please, but the O2 Pay & Go Web Bolt On is 200 MG / month 'fair use', NOT Unlimited or 1GB as you say. See:- http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/paygo/o2webbolton You CAN use it for email: both the gmail Java tool, and Yahoo Go, work on it fine, as do others if you access them through opera mini software.
The pay monthly contract Bolt On for £7-50 per month is described as 'Unlimited'. See:- http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/paymonthly/boltons However, its 'fair use' policy does not appear to be decribed on the O2 website. At:- http://www.o2.co.uk/termsconditions/tariffsandboltons0153 there is a lot of bumph under 'Data Bolt On Terms', but no figures are given. Where did you find the 1GB figure ? Is that your own invention too ?
Martin - 29 Aug 2008 06:28 GMT > Hi All, > Having changed jobs, my work phone has now gone. I want either a [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > > Ric I'd recommend a PAYG sim from Three and then their £5 Internet Monthly bundle. The Internet Monthly bundle gives you up to 1GB of data to use more or less as you want.
I check various email accounts, browse the web, listen to streaming radio/watch streaming video and more. I can connect to FTP sites and even VNC remote access my XP computer with my Nokia 6630.
About the only thing i've found that's blocked is access to orb.com and it's sub-domains - but this can be worked-around using Opera Mini.
Ensure that you use the email servers of your email account provider though and not the official Three email server - i believe that using the official Three email server isn't covered by the Internet Monthly bundle.

Get a HSDPA phone like the new Three Skype S2 (Mk2) (about 80quid) and add at least the Broadband 1Gb d/l for 10quid p/m payg
Then if in a 3.5G area you should over 2Mb/s download speed

next question - i've an HTC P3300 non-3G phone. can i keep this and stick a 3g sim in it and get unlimited GPRS?

Personally, I could never get the Skypephone S1's onboard e-mail client to work with Gmail but there is an application that you can download from Google that does work.
The new S2 may have this sorted out now, unless it was just me :-)
> next question - i've an HTC P3300 non-3G phone. can i keep this and > stick a 3g sim in it and get unlimited GPRS? The answer should be "No", a few months back when "Flat 12" on PAYG it was very clear that a 3G phone was required and even if it actually registers, sooner or later the sim card could or should get blocked.
You could still use your HTC P3300 via bluetooth through an S2 but obviously the download speeds will drop.
If you pick up a Nokia E51 you could get faster access over Wi Fi with "Joikuspot" but it hammers the battery.

mcv - 02 Sep 2008 13:30 GMT A used orange payg. got a 3g sim card, stuck it in my unlocked 3g phone, connected to my computer via bluetooth, or the usb cable, and unlimited internet for £5 a week using orange world. some months I download over 10 gig and had no probs. and u get free texts depending what u top up with.
