I'm about to transfer my Orange OVP SIM to someone else - but Orange
insist I transfer the handset also. The handset it came with is going to
someone else

What are the implications of not transferring the handset since I've put
a
variety of SIM cards in the phone it came from anyway, so it's not like
Orange are going to lock the phone down to that SIM

Orange are rather anal about keeping a set SIM with a set phone.  If you
buy a new phone off eBay, for example, Orange won't support that or the
SIM card being put in it.  All supported changes have to be made through
Orange, often involving a new 12 month contract.

I'm not sure what the implications are these days since I've had my 6210
on OVP for years, but in the worst case I think Orange will refuse to
help you in the event of problems (would anyone really notice?)

There's a lot of FUD in Orange about swapping SIMs between phones with
people talking about static build up rebooting the phone and crap like
that and I think they believe it themselves.  I suspect it's far more to
do with keeping control of the various sources of mobile revenue.

Indeed.

I had an Orange contract for many years and had a variety of phones that I
used the sim in. Although the imei number of the phone using the sim is
known to the network (as I understand it), Orange didn't seem to ever care
that it wasn't the phone that came with the sim - and if they did, they
never said anything to me about it. And I phoned them up about network
related issues enough times towards the end of the contract so they would
have had ample opportunity.
I imagine they would refuse to help you with a problem concerning the phone
if it wasn't one of theirs - but like the other poster said - who would
notice ? 99% of phone related problems can be sorted out through careful
searching of news groups and web forums - and most of the time the people in
the know on the net know more than the network's cs department anyway.

Just tell them that you're transferring the handset as well, they'll be
happy then. The account is all tied to the sim card, so it really
doesn't matter, as long as the tubby at the end of the phone is happy.

What if the person reports the phone as stolen - will they block the SIM
card (account) and IMEI number (phone)

Yes, unless the caller explains that only the handset was stolen.
The reverse of course is also possible.  Reporting the handset
stolen maybe a problem as Orange believe it has already been
transfered so expect a call from the owner of the SIM as that is
the person that has the handset registered under their name.

Yes, they seem exceptionally stupid sometimes/

None, but why not do it to keep Orange happy?

Ah, but you understand about these things. Orange clearly don't.

What I suggest you do is to play their game. Transfer the handset as
well as the sim. Then two seconds later, get the lucky recipient of
the sim to transfer the handset back to you.

That way, everyone is happy.
