Hi, my mum is looking round for a camera phone to take to Italy, she's
involved in a renovation project there and originally she was going to buy a
digi camera to record progress but she's wondering if a more elegant
solution may be to get a camera phone. The pictures I've seen so far are not
brilliant but that was on an older picture phone.

So, the question is, what phone(s) would cost a reasonable amout on a
contract, have a camera built in (unless a seperate would give far better
quality) & work in Italy?

TIA for any advice :)

I work with a 2 Megapixel camera in my property and, even then, it's
still difficult to highlight specific aspects of a room e.g. cracks and
imperfections in a wall. I very much doubt that a 100,000 or 300,000
pixel camera without a flash or optical zoom (as that is what you get
with the majority of mobile phone cameras) will, in the long run, prove
to be of much use beyond general scenery and portrait photos in good light.

IME, you'll need a dedicated camera that has optical zoom, a flash, and
allows you to take decent macro photos - expect to pay about £150+.

If you must go for a camera phone, be sure to get one with a flash
attachment as indoor photos can often be very poor without it.

Agreed - the 2M pixel camera that I was referring to in my original
response was actually a 2500 (a previous incarnation of the 2100).

Infact, if you're lucky you may still be able to get hold of it's 3M
sibling, the 3500 for around £200.

The thing I like about the x500 range is the swivel lens that makes the
camera eminently pocketable and does a very good job of protecting the
lens when not in use.

The current equivalents for these are, of course, the 2100 (2M pixels)
and 3100 (3M pixels) but their bodies have been redesigned and, if I'm
not mistaken, they don't have the swivel lens.

I have only 2 complaints with the 2500/3500 cameras
(1) Sunspots appearing on flash photos in certain light conditions -
don't know if this is a common problem among digital cameras though.
(2) the lack of focus assist lamp for low-light conditions

If she wants a good digital camera, I'm selling a Nikon Coolpix 990
(3.34Mpixel) kit for £175 s/h. In very good condition, and uses AA
batteries (comes with NiMH and a charger) so you can get batteries for
it anywhere.

Don't waste your time with a camera phone, they're designed more for a laugh
than any serious photos.  As others in the thread have recommended, a
mid-range 2MP camera would be a good choice if you want something that's
actually going to produce decent pictures.  If you're interested in seeing
what sort of pics Siemens phone cameras (one of the few with a useful
flash), have a look here:

Erm...the OP never asked for a supplier, just advice on what to
buy...and this is a non-advert NG. Please respect this.

Top posting and using an old Boxed and Ready number hardly inspires confidence

As well as "Vodaphone".

Thanks for all the advice, it was what I was thinking anyway, she just liked
the idea as it saved on kit. Another advantage she'll have with a digi is
video so I'm definitly going to reccomend she goes down that route :)

Y'know...much like I wouldn't rely on a phone to take decent pictures, I
wouldn't expect too much from a £150 digital camera in terms of video
footage.

A920 on Three? Not sure about the coverage, but it's the best Camera
phone I've seen yet, including the Concorde camera which came with my
9210...
