Hello there, I am currently on the 3 network which is complete sh.t, I have
spoken to
Carphone Warehouse who agree, and asked them is it possible to put my '3'
simcard in a standard mobile.
I thought as it is 'O2' when on a '2G' network then any 'O2' phone or
unlocked phone would work.
It does not, I have tried a few and it simply wont register the card.
Car phone warehouse say '3' have done something with the card to prevent you
from using a different handset.

Is there anyway to get my sim to work on a standard phone?

I have asked a few people who sold the handsets on ebay why they where
selling and they said they just wanted to
Sim and not the phone so they can use in a 2G phone.

Help please.

Have you tried it in an unlocked Panasonic or Orange SPV

Forget Nokias or Ericssons

3 have implemented IMEI blacking of any non-3 handset on the network, so
you may well find that this in no longer possible. In any case, putting
your SIM into a non-3 phone will have little impact on network performance.

Incorrect, if you put the USIM in a 2G handset, you'll be using the O2
network.  The O2 network has better coverage than H3G.

I was using my USIM in an unlocked Treo180 until a few weeks ago when I
cancelled the contract.

But the 3-handsets are daul-mode and when they lose 3, they will switch to
O2 automatically.

And, if you're in the middle of a call, cut you off.  In my experience,
anyway.

That's by design - it would be impossible for the phone to handoff the call
from Three (3G) to O2 (2G) automatically AFAIK? Since they have different
MNC. Just the same as if you were abroad and lost the signal on the operator
you were roaming on. The phone could switch to another network and roam on
that one instead, but the call won't handoff from the first network to the
second (again AFAIK).

It should be possible with the existing 4 UK networks though? e.g. Orange
3G --> Orange 2G (same network, different mode?).

I thought network performance will be same as 02, because in a 2G phone the
3 sim card can only use 02.
The only reason its crap now is due to 3G only @ 60% coverage and they
connect calls differently throiugh their handsets.

3 have threatened to do so, but have they actually implemented it ?

Are you serious, forcing the phone to stay roaming on O2 not having impact on
network performance ?!

Of course it will be better on O2, but a 3 phone which cant find a 3 signal
will roam onto O2 anyway, so I can't see why there would be any noticeable
difference.

Being in a marginal 3 area is worse than useless, the phone will try
and stay on 3 losing connection, out in the sticks the phone is more likely
to stay on O2 to the satisfaction of the user
