Dug my old Nokia 5146 out of the cupboard after 4 years of gathering
dust, and stuck my Carphone Warehouse Orange SIM in it (the
pre-Christmas money-maker one).
Surprised to find how much I like this old phone - its a simple phone
and I can't say that I miss WAP/colour screen/MMS/polyphonic
ringtones/java games/crap on-board camera etc that much. I just want a
*phone* without all these gimmicky bells and whistles - who here
really can't live without the on-board camera?
As I am a bit of a techno-geek (on a lower budget than some of you lot
:) I'm surprised at this luddite outburst, but maybe the recent
gimmicks added on to sell new handsets are just, well, gimmicks?

No I think you're spot on there. Although I couldn't resist getting the SPV
on Orange, the only aspect of it that feels truly useful (other than "I'm
using it because it's there") is the Bluetooth connectivity.
But for making and receiving calls, a 'phone just needs to be a 'phone....

I know what you mean. I'm lucky enough to have a SonyEricsson P900 and it
*is* great. To be honest though, when it comes to making/receiving calls its
no better than my old Nokia 8210 which I keep in the car as a spare. Good
design is good design no matter how old it is.

Which is why I maintain the best phone on the market is the Nokia 6310i.
It does what it says on the tin, as they say, and has the most phenomenal
standby battery life of any phone I've ever seen.
I keep a 6150 in the car as an emergency spare.

I'll second that!
The reason why I changed is because mine was nicked.... :(

Oh I really think that's a stupid expression - did it arrive in a tin?
No!
Some things just drive me mad.

Blimey! Isn't the standard battery 950 mAh?

That battery must be very thick, probably twice as thick as the phone itself

Yes, about the thickness of the old Nokia 5110 NiMh battery,
If people found that manageable they shouldn't have any problems
