Standard procedure - ring the number and ask the called party.

Hello,

If you know anyone working for a phone company they can do a reverse search
for you.  Someone at BT I knew used to do it and it was called a DSOL,
Display State Of Line or something.  It give subscriber details, probably
against all the Data Protection Acts but that's how things get done.
nothing is private if you know the right people, the same happens with
registration numbers on cars.  Easy to obtain details from the DVLA direct!

Doesn't work with mobiles. 07967 was originally an Orange number but with
porting (what a horrible name - shortened version of 'transporting') the
number could now be accessing any system. In most cases you will still be
charged as if it were an Orange number.

Not true; you will be charged for the network the number is on if calling
from a mobile, or the original network (in this case Orange) if calling
from a landline.

Incidentally, reverse searches are illegal under the Data Protection Act
AFAIK.

Perhaps we have our terminology wrong here but reverse searches by
those managing directory enquiries (and others authorised to use the
relevant databases) are legel.

Well obviously, but someone did mention "if you know someone working for
BT..." or whatever...

Only if calling from a fixed line. All mobile networks charge
according to the network that the number is now on.

Orange network starts with one long ring and then ring ring,
whatever the number originally was
