I have an old contract phone. Can I put a pay as you go chip in it and use
it as pay as you go or does it have to be re programmed??

The answer is "maybe".
It depends on what your phone is, what network it was originally on,
and what network the sim card you want to use is for (sim cards
contain a chip, but so do most electronics things)
It won't need to be reprogrammed, but it may need to be unlocked.

If it's unlocked you can put any Sim in it, if locked then a PAYT Sim from
the same network, but there are some exceptions, what is it, on what network ?

It is a Nokia 8310 on tmobile . I would want to put a tmobile sim in it

T Mobile lock their phones, but 8310 is DCT4 so easy to unlock yourself
