Things have just stepped up a pace! Soon well be introducing Fast WAP, otherwise known as GPRS.
Fast WAP is exactly what it says it is when youre accessing WAP info, like your VirginXtras, itll appear on your phone even faster.
Youll need a GPRS compatible phone and youll also need to get set up. Keep your eye on this website for all the details.

Tutts - 30 Jun 2004 10:29 GMT > Sounds horribly like a walled garden, no full Internet GPRS... Nope, will be full internet GPRS 1p for 2k (5quid per meg approx)
Soruk - 30 Jun 2004 23:39 GMT >> Sounds horribly like a walled garden, no full Internet GPRS... > >Nope, will be full internet GPRS 1p for 2k (5quid per meg approx) £5.12/Mb.. ouch. Shame, they could have done better than that.
Even Orange offer a pay-as-you-use GPRS offering with full (at least TCP protocol) Internet access at £3/Mb...

GPRS WAP is on virtually no interest to me. I want proper GPRS internet access. Sounds like they have no plans for that.

bextech.co.uk - 16 Jun 2004 00:42 GMT Doesn't bother me!
I don't even use WAP, have no interest in sending MMS either!
I just thought I'd post it for those who do!
You see this thing a have is called mobile phone! It is used to make and receive calls whilst mobile, and for the vast majority of people thats all they want to do, who cares about stupid gimmicks?

I agree. I tend to recommend it for people who are occasional users, but on occasion may make heavy use, likely to make most of their calls during the day, need emergency roaming (with DD setup), don't often call other mobiles or need data. That covers a lot of folks IMHO.
And the T-Mobile network coverage may not be the best - but it no longer follows that far behind.
In that scenerio it is hard to beat.

Never had a single issue with them - prompt, and stick to promises.

hairydog@despammed.com - 16 Jun 2004 22:36 GMT >i second that. virgin and orange are imo the best out there. I'm not so sure. Virgin CS are consistently not bad. Orange CS can be really good, but I get the feeling that this is despite company policy, not because of it.
I recently switched tariffs on an Orange account and a Vodafone one. For the Orange one, the first time I rang I gave up after 15 minutes. The second time I tried I was on hold for about 10 minutes, and then when I got through, I was told that I could only switch tariff at the end of the billing month, weeks away.
For the Vodafone one, the system said they were busy and there was a wait, then the call was answered a few rings later. No problem changing tariff, effective midnight that night. The CSR was helpful and friendly, and somehow the whole thing seemed efficient.

Can't fault Virgin. Only been an Orange customer for a few months, and I've only asked CS to do specific things for me (which I know of beforehand) as opposed to asking about something I have no idea about - they seem helpful enough.
Don't get me started on T-Mobile though - I think that they treat Advantage Plan customers lower than everybody else!

In the scenario you have given: occasional users, on occasion may make heavy use, likely to make most of their calls during the day and need emergency roaming (with DD setup) Fresh one-rate would also work. In addition one-rate allows for much cheaper crossnet calls (15ppm) and crossnet texts (5p). However, I'll grant you that Virgin's staff are far better informed of exact tariff details and the Fresh system for checking your balance is almost certainly the worst in the entire world, comparable to pulling out your own fingernails with pliers. Still, it is an option. ;-)

And, per second billing after the first minute irrespective of the roaming network's policy isn't bad either.

But I think it's still work tracking down an Orange OVP Virgin for transfer, Better network, free Voicemail deposits, full roaming, and full diverts. Virgins call rates (except for 0845/08xx numbers)

bextech.co.uk - 15 Jun 2004 18:14 GMT =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Virgin Mobile News June 15, 2004 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TOP STORY VIRGIN MOBILE UNVEILS SEXY SUMMER SNAPPERS AND PICTURE MESSAGING SERVICE
15.06.04: Virgin Mobile today unveiled its stunning summer line up of sexy and stylish phones. There are ten new picture-messaging phones in the range, including eight with integrated cameras - marking the launch of Virgin Mobile's new picture messaging service (MMS), which customers can enjoy using from the 1st July.
Happy snappers can ditch their cameras from this summer. Who wants to just 'click' with a camera, when you can now 'click and send' with a camera phone?
The outstanding range of photo models has plenty to offer: - All phones have picture messaging ready-to-use out of the box - All phones have a colour screen - Eight out of ten new models have an integrated camera - There are a total of 16 MMS phones in Virgin Mobile's complete range - Ranging from simple to sophisticated, there's a phone to suit all budgets.
New picture messaging service (MMS): Can you hear waves lapping gently against the shore? Can you hear the clinking of ice in your rum punch? Want to say to someone 'The weather's lovely, wish you were here'? Spice up your picture messages by adding sound or text, to really show your mates what they're missing.
Virgin Mobile customers can snap and send to their mates on any UK mobile for a flat rate of only 30p per message, whether sending from home or abroad. And it's free to receive picture messages.
Virgin Mobile customers with a picture messaging phone can send messages to all their mates (whether or not they have a picture messaging phone or are on another network ). You can even send a message direct to an email address. If your mate doesn't have a picture messaging phone, he will get a text telling him to view the message online. Virgin Mobile customers will be directed to the Virgin Mobile website where they can view the picture message.
Graeme Hutchinson, sales and marketing director at Virgin Mobile, said: "Text messaging has been a massive phenomenon over the past few years and picture messaging is about to take this trend to a level, because it's even sexier! Now Virgin Mobile customers can send photos or pictures with text and sound. Who needs clunky cameras and fiddly film, when camera phones can let you snap what you like, whenever and wherever you like, and send it to whomever you like, all at the touch of a button?"
Virgin Mobile customers with a new picture messaging phone will be able to use the service automatically, and existing customers with picture messaging phones simply need to get their picture messaging settings from Virgin Mobile by visiting www.virginmobile.com/mobile/services/messaging/ or by calling 789.
Virgin Mobile customers currently receive a host of benefits as standard, such as no line rental, a free earpiece with every phone, free voicemail and free itemised bills. In addition, texts to other Virgin Mobile customers in the UK are just 3p as standard, and picture messages are only 30p. Virgin Mobile customers can pay for their calls any way they like: by pre-pay voucher or E-Top-up, by credit or debit card or by direct debit.
