I am an Google fan and love most of their offerings but I never knew
about this.
A Google page that allows you to send free text messages. Pretty simple
looking form too (although I'd recommend reviewing the Privacy policy).

Thanks, this is very cool. There's another site - www.teleflip.com - where
you can do this, and the first 100 messages are free. Unfortunately, I just
tried teleflip and so far my message has not reached my phone. I tried the
google service and received the text message instantly, so I guess google
wins <g>.
Users should note that while the web service is free you're still paying
whatever you pay for text-messaging on the phone.

Well, don't get too carried away, and starting messaging everyone out
the yin-yang...
Any email client can SEND text messages (at least to Vzw and Sprint
phones with SMS subscriptions) for whatever the "price" of the email
client usage may be, so "free' in the sense of no extra charges for
typical SMTP services depending on how one accesses them (including use
of a gmail account).
However, it will still cost the typical cell phone RECIPIENT according
to their SMS plan.

Why use Google for this?
Just send your text to 213840xxxx@vtext.com (insert subscriber number) for
verizon
works just fine for other carriers too.(use the correct site)...no big
deal..

Isn't the number.vtext.com only for sending text to verizon phones?
Google is universal isn't it?

All the carriers have a similarly structured syntax. For example:
Alltel: number@message.alltel.com
Cingular: number@mobile.mycingular.net
Nextel: number@messaging.nextel.com
Sprint: number@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T Mobile: number@tmomail.net
To name a few additional. Google is doing nothing special other than
centralizing the addressing.

T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint PCS also let you assign aliases. T-Mobile,
additionally, will let you use an alias on outgoing messages from the phone
(so that a message from your phone shows up as [nickname] at tmomail.net
instead of [phonenumber] at tmomail.net).

Great, more clients from Google that can scan your texts and gain more
marketing information. Why not post your ssi number on the web too.
