I have been having trouble browsing the web through my LG VX8300. Most of
the websites I want to go to result in an "HTTP Error." For example, I can't
get to Gmail. Another problem is the browser lacks a function for simply
entering URLs. The only way to access a site is either to enter it as the
home page, or click on it. But clicking only works about half the time (and
never for secure sites) due to the aforementioned HTTP errors.
I emailed Google support and this is how they responded:

1. There is no information at www.google.com/xhtml on browser compatibility
2. My phone does not appear to have settings for cookies
3. I have tried to locate the manual for the LG8300's browser, in vain. The
program is listed on the LG site, but no documentation whatsoever is
provided for it.
Which leads me to the conclusion that this "browser" is a black box,
VZW-only piece of crap that only works with VZW's mobile web. This is
unfortunate, since one of my goals with this phone was to get basic web
browsing capability. It would be great to find another browser for this
phone, but that is one hack I have not been able to find anywhere.
Comments are welcome.

Hmm ... my phone (version 1 software) has an option (#4) to "Go to URL" where
I can type in the URL I need. Also, if you select "Search", option 3
indicates "Go to URL". Every site I try to go to seems to work fine.
Why don't you give Verizon a call and see if your phone is provisioned
correctly ... or perhaps there is an issue with Data (or 1x data) in your
area.

Actually I found mine under the "search" feature on the LG VX8300 and I
entered the web site for GMAIL (google.com) scrolled down to gmail and
entered my login and password and it works perfectly. However I tried my
work address with the https:// and it did not allow a secured web session.
Don't know if it is by default in the phones browser or that the site would
not allow the connection since it may not have the ability to allow
"cookies" etc.
But many other sites except for those that are really graphics intensive
came in fine.

When I hit either "go to URL" or "search" the phone goes into "sending" mode
for what seems like forever, then I get a network error message.
Could it be that the proxy server I am using just isn't allowing me to use
these services?

What's the exact message?

And the answer is....an emphatic yes. I switched to a $1/month proxy server,
Hopke.net (http://hopke.net/proxy/proxyhome.php) and all my problems were
solved. The server is fast, reliable, and I can access *everything* without
any HTTP errors. I highly recommend this service.

That's why I switched from all the mirages of free proxy servers and use
hopke.net. Hopke is far more reliable than the several free servers I tried
and the price is darn near zero.

Your phone needs to be reprovisioned. Call Verizon and get technical support.
Part of the fix should include a data update via a call to *22829 or some such
number. Don't dial the number yourself, just call, as they have to change
things on their end and the settings must be downloaded with the programming
update.

This is the main reasons I use www.skweezer.net as my home page. You can
create and store a list of favorite web pages, you don't have to type in
their URLs, which is a real pain on a phone.
Once you register and create a free account, and I haven't received the
first piece of spam, you can surf between your commonly used web pages much
eaiser. You can also create these favorties much more easily by doing all
the typing at your PC keyboard, but you can create or edit from your phone
if you need to.
Skweezer also translates normal web pages to a format compatible with the
phone. There are very few pages I wan't to access that aren't handled by
skweezer. My use is probably different than others as I read and read and
read blogs and magazine web sites. Of course, if the most important web
page is the one you can't access, that's a big deal.
I think you would find skweezer a big help and it may solve some of your
problem.

Thanks, Scott. I've investigated Skeezer for my PDA and didn't think the
cost was worth it. I've solved the phone problem, meanwhile, by switching to
www.hopke.net as my proxy server. For $1 a month all my phone-related
internet problems vanish.

I didn't know there was a cost to make skweezer a homepage or to use it as
often as you want. I've never given them any credit card info.
I'm glad hopke is working well for you. I really like it.
