Hi,

I have a vx8300. The 2007 RAV4 comes with Bluetooth for hands-free
phone operation. Will that work with my phone? I know verizon has
crippled some of the phone features, but having never used BT and
now knowing much about it, I'm curious if (a) this would work with
the Verizon vx8300, and (b) whether it's an useful feature to have.

Facts about (a) and opinions/comments about (b) much welcome :-)

Thanks,
Esmail

Why not go to your Toyota dealer, open the car to connections and connect
the phone to it and try it out?

Let's hope it only uses the car as a BT handsfree kit, not the car calling
Toyota or the cops every time you start speeding in the 70 zone so the
company can blame YOU when it breaks.

The car computers store your driving habits so the mechanics at the
dealership can download them for "evidence" should your relationship with
the company go amouk, you know......

Scary thoughts.

I'll try that .. it's just that I have never used BT on my phone
(or any phone for that matter) before, so it may not be quite as
routine for me the first time to do this.

On BT devices, it's just a matter of putting them in connecting mode so
other devices can see them, then selecting the device you want to connect
to from the list it finds.  Of course, the car would have to be turned on
to its connect mode, too, so it would broadcast its availability to be
connected to.  Once the connection is made, BT ignores any other connection
attempts to keep the kiddies from talking in your earphone from across the
mall.....or listening to those disgusting things you tell your girlfriend
you're going to do to her, later, much to her delight....(c;

The bluetooth system should work fine with your car.

Ha ha! I'm here as well and I have the 8300 too :-). I promise I'm not
stalking you, we just both have good taste LOL! While I do not have BT in my
RAV4, I agree that you should try pairing it with a RAV4 at the dealer. BT
headsets are really hit and miss with the 8300. My Plantronics 510 works
well but I know others have faired not so well with other models... search
on Howardforums.com and you might find something there. I haven't had time
to read that one in a while so I'm not sure if anyone has brought it up
there...

Are you kidding me??? ;-)  .. next thing I'll find you on comp.lang.ruby
and sci.astro.amateur!! (well, haven't been too active there recently).

Can't argue with that!

I'll just have to try it out at the dealers if I have a chance. Not
having used BT ever before it should be interesting.

Cheers .. and I'm sure I'll see you around somewhere ;-)

LOL. Nope...no comp ngs for me although I cannot rule out the sci.astro due
to my older boy's interests...

Probably :-) BT is something I didn't think I'd need until I got it (kind of
like the sunroof in the new 'rolla).

I heard that a firmware update just became available that improves the
bluetooth performance of this phone.

Hi Don,

Is this version 2 of the firmware available at the Verizon stores
now? I tried to check a few weeks back after reading about them
on the Howard forums and they didn't have any idea about them.

Thanks,
Esmail

Should be. It is here in the Tampa market.

Great, I'll ask for it next time I have a chance. I
understand the upgrade takes about 30 minutes? (That's
what they told me last time).

Don't know about the RAV4 but i did manage to get the 8300 working with
an 2006 ACURA TSX, a lil' tricky getting it paired at first but once i
did it worked quite nicely and given the quiet interior of the TSX
conversations were quite audible coming thru the sound system.
Too bad it was a courtesy car, my 2005 TSX doesn't have the bluetooth
option.  :-(

Hi,

thanks for the additional data point. I'll have to give this
a try when I have the chance.

Cheers,
Esmail

One other thing, once i had the phone & car paired the TSX's voice
automated system asked if i wanted to transfer my phonebook from the
VX8300, believing the VX8300 did not have this capability i simply
bypassed this option. I know the VX8300 can transfer Vcards but i'm not
sure it will transfer the entire contents of the contacts list at once,
(VZW's crippled BT and all) this may have to be done one at a time or
entered manually. As i wasn't sure how long i'd have the courtesy car i
did not explore this further.
