Matters not what they think!
If they do force you to activate it when you buy it, when you get it home.
just switch the activation back to her old phone online-- for free. Then you
can sell the new deactivated phone to your bud if you want.
One possible wrinkle is if Mom's current phone is not E911-GPS enabled and
thus you cannot reactivate it. If that's the case, maybe do the new every
two online- I think those come unactivated.

Thanks
My moms phone is a Motorola T730c. I also have an extra one of those
that I keep around in the event some happens to my new phone.

I suggest you order the phone online either way...my new every two phone
was $100 off online at the time PLUS the NE2. Customer Service said the
$100 online discount would be eliminated at the time of checkout...but
it wasn't. My LG9800 was $99.00 total brand new. Of course my contract
was renewed.
The phone arrived unactivated; I remember because I decided to take it
to the VZW store across the street from my office for activation. They
weren't too happy about me buying it online but then they only like you
at commission time. They didn't charge me anything though...that was a
surprise.

It was planning on it online, as the last did not cost me anything
after the discounts and they even through in free delivery. No one I
have told seems to belive that the phone for nothing, but I did.

Hi all
I just received the phone via FedEx, After reading through the
information that came with the phone I notice a sheet that states that
I must activate the phone within 30 days or I will be charged for the
full price of the phone. It however does not state that I this phone
must remain activated for any length of time. Will do some more
research and if looks like I can activate the phone for a day or even a
few minutes and move my mom's number back to her Motorola 730 I will.
If not I guess I will just send it back to Verizon.

It probably needs to be active when they check it. They may or may not check
it on the 30 day mark.

Not sure, just going by following listed at the bottom of there form.
"If you received a discount on the price of your replacement/upgrade
phone based on your your for a new 2 year Customer Agreement, you must
follow the above instructions to activate your phone and agree to the
Customer Agreement terms and conditions. if you do not follow these
instructions within 30 days of your order date, the difference between
the retail pice of the phone and the discounted price you paid will be
charged to your Verizon Wireless service bill. Both of those prices are
listed on the Customer Receipt included with your shipment. New Jersey
and Pennsylvania customer: You have have already agreed to your new 2
year Customer Agreement, and so will continue to receive the discounted
phone even if your don't follow the instructions above."
If your are correct in what you say I may be better off to just send
the phone back before my 15 day trial is up, so that I owe nothing.
Also my friend he may be transferred with his job. Looks like he may be
moving to an area where Verizon does not offer service or least does
not sell and activate phones. I think the wireless company there would
Union, which is a local company in Wyoming. Their phones are like those
with Cingular I think. This phone would be no good to him there.
He has suggested that I sell the phone on eBay and make some money and
from I see I am sure that I could get at least $50-$100. Have had other
people(friends) tell me that Verizon may not let someone else activate
this phone for a certain period time. They do this simply to insure
that these discounted phones are not sold for a profit.
