Nokia 6236i Problems with Diego and Jar/Jad files.

Hey, I can't get Diego to work with my 6236i. Diego loads up fine and
says a phone is connected, but ALL the options are grayed out and my
phone is "unknown". I use an official DKU-2 USB cable. I'm just
confused and frustrated since others have had so much success.

And when I attempt to "Install applications" with Nokia PC Suite, all
it seems to have done is transfer the jar and jad files, and they
appear in the "Extras" menu. Just those files specifically, not the
title of the apps installed. Any info would be lifesaving, thanks!

Jar files don't work because Verizon phones don't run Java. They run BREW.

It's all fun and games until someone starts a bonfire in the living room.

Gotcha. Are applications commonly created in both ways?

Also, does anyone have any information on the Diego situation? I run
Diego 3.00. Thanks again.

Who's the publisher? Contact them and find out if they publish a BREW
version of their game, and if it's available through VZW.

Depends. BREW requires yearly licensing fees -- no surprise here; BREW
was created by Qualcomm, the company that gets tons of royalties for the CDMA
software in phones used by Verizon, Sprint and others.

The BREW environment is also more restrictive (it's designed to be).

So there are probably a fair number of Java2 Mobile Edition developers who
do not also create BREW-enabled games.

Also keep in mind that BREW allows the cellular carrier to tightly restrict
what users can download. If your carrier doesn't carry it, it's unlikely
you'll be able to get it to run on your phone.

Thanks Steven, you've been a big help. Can you offer any insight into
my Diego problem?

Unfortunately, probably not. I haven't been a VZW customer since July '04,
and the last VZW Nokia I owed... the last Nokia I owned, period... was a
3285, which does not do Java *or* BREW. :)

Thanks anyway, you aswered my other question completely, and I'm very
grateful.

I'm just a little frustrated, since apparently it's very easy to alter
the ringtone/Java settings in the 6236i under Verizon if you have
Diego, but not for me. I'll just wait a while to see if anyone else can
help with that. Thanks again.

I'll be curious to see that too, since it sounds like Diego itself is a Java
app.

Best,
 Steve

My understanding is that Diego allows one to install (or "unlock"?) Java
Runtime Environment (JRE) on Verizon Nokias. I was looking for it at one
point for my 6236i so I could install the Opera browser which requires
the JRE, but it is was pretty well hidden (unless I contributed all
kinds of info, and warez (?), to xphilez.org), so I gave up on it since
the screen is too darn small for serious browsing anyway.  It works much
better as modem for my Zire 72 via infrared, and even that 320x320
screen is a bit restrictive for a lot of sites that assume 1024x768 screens.

FWIW,
ROC

Yeah, Diego would be helpful to me, if it would let me alter things.
Ha, but ALL the options are grayed out.
