Why should the length of time you've been with VZW be a deciding
factor in your sense of entitlement? If you can still make and
receive calls, why not just live with it. Or buy a replacement off of
eBay.

Wow!
eBay? What is that? Insurance company?

No, it's an alternative for people who break their phones and didn't
buy insurance. Check into it.
I'm with you Val. This whole phone buying and insurance is a scam.
Phones cost too much retail and the discount you get from Verizon for a
two-year contract is totally too much work.
The deductible is $50 each time for the $4.99 a month "insurance" and
they will dump you if you use it twice within two years. If you have a
Motorola you can have them repair it for $75 no matter what is wrong
with it. No limit on the amount of times you need to fix it. Verizon
will not tell you this. When we asked Verizon at the store if you could
repair a brand new phone that had physical damage they said NO and that
we would have to buy a new phone at retail price. Flat out lie.
Here's the form:
http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/Motosupport/source/Repairform.asp
Make sure you call them first though as the process is not fast and you
need to make sure they know ahead of time that you will need
"out-of-warranty" service. That will speed things up.
See your manufacturer if not Motorola,
If you use your phone for heavy business use and can't be out of pocket
you need the "insurance" as that buys you the fast turnaround. I just
always save an old phone as a spare now so I can use the service option
and not get scammed by Verizon for the 5-buck a month.
Let's face it. Cell phones should be available for purchase at retail
prices that are really market driven and you should be able to go to
your nearest Best Buy and pick one up at a reasonable price any time you
want without a contract scam. Then you could negotiate for cheaper
cellular service prices because you weren't always stuck with two-year
contract or forced to pay the $175 cancel fee. They'd be more worried
that you would leave and their service would be better and pricing would
be even more favoring the consumer.

Your wish will come true. Eventually. You are probably too young to remember
when you were not allowed to purchase your own home phone (wired) and hook
it up to baby bell equipment in your house. It as against the damn law! Now,
of course, home phones (wired or radio phones) are available everywhere and
the phone company allows you to hook them up, no problem. Cell phones will
follow. But it'll be a while, I think.

They're not? Or are the black helicopters keeping the prices
falsely inflated when you buy directly from the manufacturers?
So the Cell providers can give you heavy discounts and sell
them to you at a LOSS? (It's on the public books. They expense
subsidized phones. Selling discounted phones costs them money.)
And once you have service you are free to buy your replacements
and upgrades anywhere you want with no contractural impact. (This
is true for VZW but not other carriers.)
"This whole phone buying and insurance is a scam.
Phones cost too much retail and the discount you
get from Verizon for a two-year contract is totally

And then there is the entitlement thing. The OP's argument comes
down to "They have a lot of money and I don't. They should give
me some.".
" and $150 for the company worth less then a penny for my budget."
And $150 in your budget is worth less than a penny for the homeless
guy on the corner. You should give him your car.

Well, you inserted a whole bunch of stuff form the OP that I did not comment
on. Mainly because I didn't agree with it, but felt no need to rebut it. I
deleted that stuff. Basically I agree with your comments.
However, in general, I believe there are a whole lot more conditions buying
cell phones today than there will be in the future. Especially in the
contract arena. One day, just like with the land line carriers, phones will
be a dime a dozen and there will be no contracts or no cancellation fees.
Just like the land line folks, cell phone carriers will just be happy to
have you as a customer - month to month.
Remember paying for dial up Internet by the minute? I do. All things
technology related will change for the better and become cheaper and routine
commodities. Eventually. I bought my first hand held calculator for $30 -
probably eqivilent to around $300 today.
VZW itself has greatly improved service and lowered prices (per minute) over
the last few years. And they'll keep doing it. As will other carriers. Now
that almost everybody has a cell phone everything about cell phones and
carriers will become better and cheaper.
Before you respond about how I kind of hijacked this thread and how I am
basically talking out of my xss, I'll give it to you. you're right. But this
is my opinion.

I would like to agree with you but have you actually seen numbers that
would validate that phones aren't subsidized?

Sure they do. It was offered as an option to too friends. In one case it
worked out but took 5 weeks. In the other case they claimed the phone
had water damage when they returned it over a month later.

Damnit, I've been paying my bank $210 a month for the last 4 years,
and yesterday I rammed my car into a wall. It's totalled.
I don't have insurance, and my friggin bank tells me I'm screwed. Why
don't they value me as a customer and replace my car for free?

Thank you all, who understood that all I needed was an advice how to
replace my phone, for your valuable comments.
For all other lonely yappers, My local Verizon store replaced my
damaged phone with brand new one without any questions or problems. And
appologized for the inconvenience.

Great-- so now they'll probably raise my rates to pay for it.
On second thought, maybe not. They probably just gave you a "refurbished"
(read used) phone-- which likely used to belong to some guy who recently
died from a contagious disease. No doubt they took it back from his wife and
gave her a refund because they felt sorry for her-- recently widowed and all
;-)

I wonder what lie he had to tell them to explain how his phone got
broken.
"Uh, your worthless leather case opened by itself and let my phone
fall out!"
"I took a picture of a really ugly girl, and the lense shattered all
by itself."
"I swear, it was broke when I got it!"

Yeah, Sure they did.
