My girlfriend recently replied to a text message I sent her, and when I
received the reply in my Inbox, it  came back with <somename>@vtext.com
instead of <hernumber>@vtext.com.  I don't have Verizon, but she does
and I received this reply on my Blackberry.  Not wanting to jump to
conclusions, I wanted to ask someone here how that could happen.
Thanks in advance :)

She was in bed with her old boyfriend when she sent it and used his phone?

Assuming you're not being a smart-aleck, she wouldn't have received the
text Isent HER on HIS phone . . . correct?

That is a feature of a vtext.com account: let's one set up an alias like
that so the phone number is not "given away" to anyone who receives text
messages from it.  The alias is a perfectly valid email address for her
phone to receive text messages (assuming she DID set it up on her
vtext.com account??).

When verizon first setup text messaging, you had the option of setting up an
alias name as part of your profile.  It would be <somename>@vtext.com.  If
the message was sent from her phone, that is one option.  Even though you
sent the message to her phone, she doesn't have to reply from her phone.
She could use another phone, or the internet.  If she used an internet
account, she could have her reply name be whatever she wants.  Hope that
helps.  dr

That feature is STILL available (for my vtext.com/cell phone account, at
least).
