LG 8300 power problems

Ange1o DePa1ma - 28 Oct 2006 18:51 GMT I used to sing the praises of the LG VX8300's power management. Recently, I've been finding that it loses power rather quickly. I had 1-2 bars two days ago and hardly used the phone. Today when I went to power up it was dead.
Are there any settings that will keep the phone from sucking juice out of the battery when it's not in use? Or can this just be a bad battery?
Thanks,
Angelo

There is? Can you tell me where? I've not come across it and I am not very impressed by the battery life of the VX8300

All of which can be done in the areas under display, Bluetooth, sounds, back light etc. I see that my Razr has the features as well but easier to do. I also own the Vx8300 and I have better battery life than on the Razr. Just replaced the Razr's battery after less than a year.

Based on your original post I thought there was a dedicated menu option that let you put it into low-power (ie battery saver) mode. Thanks for clarifying.

Ange1o DePa1ma - 30 Oct 2006 00:59 GMT It appears everything is turned off on my phone. So there is no "power saving" setting, right?

But On my Vx8300 it does not other than turning off or modifying certain functions under the tools menu. Strange in deed. So strange I had to look at the owners manual last evening.

i don't think the vx8300 has a great battery life, esp compared to my audiovox 8900 I had before.
turning off gps locate and bluetooth will help, as will shortening the time the backscreen in on. i think i shortened the time to 15 secs on mine.
not sure about other things, though i would be curious to find out what if other things can be done.

I had the same symptoms and more, like a battery life indicator that sometimes went up after use. The battery had a slight but noticeable bulge. That was enough for Verizon to swap it out.

You can shut off EVDO if you don't use it. That helps, in particular, if you are in an area of fringe EVDO signal.
It sounds to me like your battery has gone defective. My Wife and I both have that phone and we each get several days between charges. Actually, I lied. My wife goes about four or five days between charges. I usually charge when the battery indicator drops down one bar from full (still 4 out of 5 bars), and that is usually every other day.
BTW, it is hard on Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer batteries to let them go dead. The function best moderately to fully charged. Letting them go dead or nearly so reduces the battery life. I recommend that you replace the battery and then consider charging it every night .. or when the battery shows signs of beginning to lose power from full (for me, that is every other day, but I can easily go every three days and still avoid a low charge on the battery).

do you do that in the service menu? Under Mode preference? I see 4 choices there .. which one should I select to turn off EVDO -- I do live in a fringe area.
the choice are:
digital only hybrid (currently selected) digital only non hybrid hdr only 1x only
thanks eb

If you select 1x only, your phone will not work in areas that do not support 1x (there are still CDMA towers that do not support 1x somewhere I am sure).

Hi, can you tell me what would be a better choice to select to deactivate EVDO?
Thanks!

I am curious whether the phone will work in non-1x voice areas while in this mode, but I suspect not.

Just as a follow up -- ever since making the change in the settings my battery life has improved quite dramatically. Whereas before I would start loosing a bar a day or even more, I have had full bars on the battery indicator for the last few days w/o having to recharge. (I don't use the phone very much in either case).
I have 1x service where I live and in Cleveland where I drive to fairly frequently. I have to remember to try other settings if I ever end up in an area where I can't get service, but for my regular day to day usage in the place I live, having the 1x only setting is definitely the way to go as I don't have to continuously worry about running out of juice.
cheers,

Jim Higgins - 04 Nov 2006 15:46 GMT >>>> the choice are: >>>> [quoted text clipped - 28 lines] > > eb Page 93 of my manual for the VX8300 makes no mention of this, it just talks "Charger and Adapter Safety" and "Battery Information and Care". What is EVDO and where can it be turned off in the menu structure? I just got the basic phone services with no V Cast. I have seen the EVDO icon at times and 1X all the time. The display is set for 5 seconds and the sound levels are turned down but I can't find mention of EVDO in my manual, definately not in the index.

I've read (and my own observation seems to confirm this) that if you are in a fringe EVDO area the battery is used up much faster. I have 1x consistently, but the EVDO indicator would come on and off.
There is a service menu (use at your own risk disclaimer). Push the OK button, and then enter a series of zeros (I don't know exactly how many, you'll see a bunch of ??? as you enter, they will go away).
You'll be in a menu then, check under network preferences (or something similar), there you can see the settings I mentioned above.
Hope that helps,
eb
ps: be careful not to change setting elsewhere in the menus if you aren't sure what they do .. i don't mess with those settings. under the original software for the phone (which i still have) you could also enable the mp3 capability of the phone. i understand that with the recent software revision this is enabled by default.
Jim Higgins - 04 Nov 2006 16:35 GMT >>>>>> the choice are: >>>>>> [quoted text clipped - 41 lines] > could also enable the mp3 capability of the phone. i understand that > with the recent software revision this is enabled by default. Got it. Under "Services" I have 1) Service Prg., 2) Field Tests, 3) Network Select, 4) Data, 5) SMS, 6) H/W Test, 7) FCC Test, 8) WAP Setting, 9) Get It Now Settings, 10 Battery Test and 11) Music Setting.
Under "Network Select" I selected "Mode Preference" and under that I selected "1X Only". Was this the way to extend the battery life more if you only wanted basic stuff? The original selection was "Digital Only Hybrid". I assume that if I got in trouble from fiddling around that *228 and "program your phone" would get me back to the original default?
Is there a link to a web site that discusses the "Service Menu" choices?

As someone else posted you may be in areas where this may not work and you might have to try to re-able the original setting, but I think 1x is pretty wide spread.
> I assume that if I got in trouble from fiddling around that *228 and > "program your phone" would get me back to the original default? not sure, I somewhat doubt it though.
