My phone usually displays the 1x icon in the upper left. Today, in
basically the same area I always use the phone, I see it was replaced
with "EV." What does this mean and any ideas why it just popped up?

It  has to do with type of signal, I believe.  "EV" is
better  and will use up less battery than "1x" because of
the amount of "effort" the phone takes to pull in a signal.

thanks the responses. They were helpful.

EV and 1x are both digital networks so battery life isn't going to be
effected. Now analog on the other hand will decrease your battery life.
As far as making calls, the type of network will not be noticed. When
you you use V Cast, Mobile Web, or Get It Now, you'll will see a giant
jump in speed (about 7 times faster).

One item;

If you don't do web browsing, or anything else with your phone besides
making/getting calls, note; EV-DO capability may cause a drop in your
battery life. Should you be "just a phone user" (no data), AND you notice
your battery going dead much more quickly than before, there is a way to
disable EV-DO and solve the battery problem. It's done via the keypad (no
cables or software or anything) and takes about 30 seconds. It's a
well-known problem, with a well-known solution.

Wow...this one was easy. I had intentions of disabling EV-DO but
thought you had to go through a seem edit to do it. Even without it, my
Weatherbug app works fine, and everything else I do is phone or SMS.
I'm looking forward to seeing how well my battery hangs on now.

I think my phone is eating the battery under the EV mode. Is this the
link to the correct dirctions for turning it off in favor of 1X?
