V265 Battery Life Issue

Bruce - 31 Oct 2006 14:46 GMT Or the lack of battery life thereof. The unit is almost two years old and has recently started discharging batteries at a rapid rate. At first, I thought the battery was bad, so I replaced my extended life battery with a new one. Both batteries were Motorola branded from reputable souces. The second battery didn't do much better.
I then had the firmware updated from V26X_1.0.16.14P to V26X_1.0.16.17P. For a while, this seemed to have fixed it. The battery life went back to normal for the next couple of charging cycles. However, it has since reverted to draining my extended life battery in a day.
I don't talk on the phone much and it doesn't roam into analog mode where I live and work. The PRL hasn't changed since this issue began a few weeks ago. The last PRL only affected AZ anyway and I don't go there (Thanks, Dave!).
I considered chargers, but I have three different chargers and the behavior doesn't change in respect to battery life.
I strongly suspect that the phone is fried, but I want this group's opinion on this. Also, I want to know if others have experienced a similar issue with this model phone or its close relatives, e.g., the V276, and if so, how did you resolve the issue, if at all.

I have 2 of the V265 phones, 20 months old, and both started running down the batteries at a rapid rate about 6-8 weeks ago. They used to last for 3-4 days, now they are only lasting 1-2 days.
I do not use the phones much ( VoIP is great! )and have never seen analog on the display.
Took the phones on Vacation to Manteo, NC last week and batteries lasted 5 days, so I do not believe it is the batteries.
I am in Northwest NJ, near the town of Newton, 07860
I am wondering if the conversion of the network to EVDO has hurt the performance. The V265 is, of course, a 1x phone. I also have just activated a used E815 to replace one of the V265s and battery life is fine on that phone. That is an EVDO phone and the red "EV" is lit on the display, so EVDO is in the area.

Bruce - 01 Nov 2006 14:20 GMT Tim,
Thank you for your reply. I wasn't aware of the network update. I live in central Ohio and I would imagine that EVDO would be here too, but I don't have equipment that uses it. This gives me something more to ponder. Is the V325 an EVDO phone?

It should be charged every night and allowed to run down. If you get 2 years out of a battery that is very good as that is about how long they last. I have been selling VZW for the past 7 years so I speak from experience. I also think enough of the 325 to get one for my wife. I use a VX5200.

I see you think enough of the 325 to get your wife the phone but not yourself?
I too got one for my wife *and* daughter...after 6 phones (one of which is still working, but then again the day is young), we had Verizon switch out the last dead on to a Samsung.
Personally, I was amazed at the failure rate (see previous). IMHO, I would NOT recommend that phone to ANYONE. Not unless sending/receiving calls on a phone isn't a priority.

I had a V60 that was having battery issues, bought a new one from either Verizon or Motorola directly and it solved the issue.
I don't think the V265 is an EVDO phone. I think the best a voice phone does is 1X. EVDO is for data and without a data phone I don't think it matters.

Bruce - 03 Nov 2006 03:53 GMT Dave,
That was my thought too. And for a while, the new battery did the trick. This is no longer the case, unfortunately. A V325 is starting to look better, even though I'd hate to commit another two years over one.

In 6 weeks we've had to return SIX of them (yes you read that right... SIX).
The first two froze up after being on for less than 2 or 3 hours.
One's screen went garbled and the screen just locked up. Resets didn't work.
One would only send calls but would not accept incoming calls (would roll right over to voice mail).
Then the next two had extremely slow reaction to any key command. Hit menu, and it took upwards of 4 or 5 SECONDS to respond. Same thing when you tried to send or end a call.
And, if you're interested in using a speakerphone, forget it. It has the lowest volume of any Motorola phone I've ever owned. And of course, it doesn't have bluetooth either.
Great looking phone, but really poorly made.

I'll certainly take your anecdotes into account when selecting my next phone. It's possible that Motorola got the message and bolstered its production line since then.
Dave seems to think quite a bit of this phone, albeit I have yet to hear him elaborate on its merits. Also, it's the only tri-mode phone left in the inventory. I'd hate to be shackled with CDMA only.
Right now I'm using my old, trusty V120. It's not a great phone by any means, but at least I don't have to charge it twice a day.

Its probably the best tri-mode that Verizon offers right now. But I wouldn't call it a GREAT phone.
Out of three phones we got (myself, wife, step-daughter), the step-daughter's phone died, or at least that's what she said.
Unfortunately, I live in VA and she now lives in OH (but on my family plan). So I snail mailed her my V120e and activated it, switched out the V325 with a new one and snail mailed it to her. I activated it last night, lets see if it works any better. At least we can go back to the V120e if the new V325 is a dud.
(However, I think the problem lies between the user and phone and not the phone itself, if you know what I mean)

I wouldn't jump to *that* conclusion quite yet. Like I said, my daughter and wife both had the V325 and we went through SIX of them and my wife especially, takes very good care of hers.
The V325 is just, IMHO, junk and Verizon knows it because when I took #5 back the tech just sighed and looked back at the other tech and asked if they had any 325's still in stock. He didn't even check that phone out. He just tossed it on the counter and got another one. In fact, when I asked him if this was a fluke or if other people had similar problems, he just looked up at me and said, "what do YOU think?".
I could tell by the look on his face that he's had plenty of returns.
Bruce - 07 Nov 2006 02:59 GMT Dave,
Thanks again for your input. Getting a V60i or similar has definately crossed my mind. I can't find a good outlet for those, unfortunately. Those jokers on Ebay want $15 to ship a 3oz item. Ridiculous! The V120e I have is doing okay, but it's not as sensitive as the V265 in marginal signal areas. A replacement retractable antenna has mitigated this limitation to a sizable degree however.
So, here's another question to pose to the group: where can I find a V60x (not p) in good condition for a reasonable price, if such an outlet exists?

That's where I got my V120e. It was brand new, doubt you'd be able to find a V60 series brand new, but you neve know.

Bruce - 08 Nov 2006 02:23 GMT Okay, Dave, you talked me into it. I found a new V60s on Ebay. The buyer seems reputable enough, but he's a bit pricey. I'll see in a few days how this goes down.
