My cell phone was last seen falling into the gap between the subway and
platform - I've given up on getting it back. I've got about 3 months
left until my contract is up for renewal, and I was wondering what the
cheapest way to go was. My needs aren't really all that great - I
don't need text messaging, camera or the internet.

Assuming you are staying with Verizon go in and user your new every two.
My buddy lost his phone the other night and when he went back to the
place where he thought he lost it he found a "thinner" version in the
parking lot. He was 3 months away from contract end and they did
everything without any issue.

Second eBay.
You can pick up a cheap v60s, LG VX4400, etc. which should work.

I'll send you a 3-year old LG model that works fine if you pay for shipping.
Send me a postage-paid box for six ounces or so -- I have a charger too.
Email me at my return address minus the anti-spam message.
