Which would be the easiest (and cheapest) way to get pictures out of the
phone: 1) use a micro-SD card and adapter and put them in my camera and
download or 2) use a USB cable (assuming there is one) from the VX8300 to
download?

The Micro Card depending on size would be more expensive than the usb
cable method. However I found getting pictures to the microsd card to
my computer is really easy. it is also great for loading the music on
the card as well. Have not tried the usb cable method but I believe it
comes with the music essentials kit for the phone.

Data transfer over a USB cable to and from the 8300 is very, very slow
using BitPim.  You will want to use a card reader.

USB card-readers are generally cheaper than prices on USB cables, too.
Do a search for an SD card-reader on newegg.com or tigedirect.com.

I agree.  I chose a 512m card over the cable...   just the extra ability to
take videos for as long as you want, store countless images, add music,
etc...   more than makes up for the very slight price difference.  I got my
card on eBay, and it came with a free reader...   I'd check there.
