Backup Assistant

One of the things I've always missed as a VZW user is the ability to back up
my Contacts list without connecting a cable to my phone and fooling around
with software I know little about. In the past I've actually been reduced to
copying my Contacts list manually into a notebook! With almost 300 contacts,
quite a chore.

I refuse to get caught up in the VZW nickel-and-dime-you-to-death syndrome,
and won't pay extra monthly for anything that doesn't involve using my phone
as a phone----I pay four phone bills, none reimbursed, plus two DSL
accounts, and enough is enough. If I happen to take a picture with my phone
which I absolutely MUST send out (hasn't happened yet), I'll take the
one-time hit.

Well, VZW appears to have answered my need. I got an e-mail advising me that
Backup Assistant is available and free for me to use. The system goes into
my phone wirelessly and uploads my Contacts list. I can print a copy for my
files, work with Contacts on my PC, and "push" the updates to the phone.
Just what I needed. If the uploads/downloads cost me 10c each (anybody
know?) I'll live with it, since I don't update my book more than once every
couple of weeks anyway.

If you live in fear of losing priceless contact numbers if your phone gets
trashed, this might be just what you need....

The info I got states they are waiving the $1.99/month charge for this
application.

Anybody use this? Any catches? Tips/tricks? Bugs?

Oh, and the disclaimer states I get the app free as long as I remain
subscribed to the "My Account" feature....Since "My Account" is free, why
would they feel the need to say that? Who would discontinue "My Account"?

I read the NG regularly, but if this was somehow covered and I missed it,
sorry, my bad.

I see how to bet BA on a new My Account signup-- but can't find the link to
signup as an existing My Account member. Do you know where it is?

You scroll down to the section where the back up assistant is offered.
Click the link and then follow the directions. You do have to go to
get it now and then get going, back up assistant and download to your
phone. You will have to select a pin from the phone download site and
then when it is all set up you go to
http://www.virizonwireless.com/backupassistant  to give your name and
other information. You can then view the contact list and make changes
etc.

The whole process took less than 5 minutes when I just did it.
You do have to set up each phone if you are using more than one
however.

Thanks! I found that and tried it but encountered a strange error.

Before installing BA on my phone, the system did a phone number
confirmation-- and the number it showed was not mine. I didn't see any way
to correct the number-- so I just backed out of the install and deleted it.

I'll have a few spare minutes tomorrow afternoon so will stop by one of the
local VZW stores that has decent tech support-- apparently a rarity if the
posts on this NG are to be believed!

I believe I saw a question in the FAQ asking exactly that, it had something
to do with the "MIN" being different than the "MDN" in the phone.....

Check the FAQ's for Backup Assistant...pretty sure it was there.

I cut and pasted this right from the FAQ....a little confusing (to me), but
it proves you're not crazy LOL!!!

During setup, why does Backup Assistant show a different number than the
phone number I use for my mobile phone?
Your phone actually has two numbers with which it is associated: the Mobile
Internal Number (MIN) and the Mobile Directory Number (MDN). Backup
Assistant should only use the MDN for the service to perform correctly. In
most cases these numbers are identical, but if they differ you should answer
"NO" when Backup Assistant shows you the incorrect number during the number
verification process. A SMS message will be sent to your provider to
identify the correct number. When your correct number is shown, select "YES"
to continue the installation. Standard TXT messaging rates apply.

Again HTH,
Dean

My question is a little bit different than the majority, I think. I
have been using Backup Assistant for almost a year now since I have a
lot of contacts and I just saw that it was being offered free. I
checked my account and it still appears that I am paying the $1.99 for
it. Does anybody know what existing customers of BA need to do? I'd
surely like to use it for free, now that it is, and I'm sure my mom
would do. Also, yes, I do use "My Account" regularly.
