I recently tried VZ Navigator for 2 situations - once was a "last mile" direction-finding mission to find a street and house off the highway when I was truly lost. It worked flawlessly. The other was a deliberate attempt to divert off the highway to get back home, and try to take back roads. VZ Navigator insisted, many times, for at least a few miles at different times, that I take the next legal U turn. I couldn't help but wonder, if I had a TomTom or other pocket-based self-contained GPS device, if the directions would have been better. During the second attempt, I ended up right where I started, and just opted for the highway. Both were during my 30-day trial, and more than enough airtime. So, it looks like VZ Nav can be decent if needed, but not always the best option. In my case I had changed course at the very beginning of my trip and stayed on the navigator's suggested course the rest of the way. I haven't tried the VZ Navigator yet, but I had a similar experience with Hertz Neverlost. It successfully got me to my hotel, which had parking lots both in front and in back of the building. I pulled into the front parking lot and she insisted that I should make the next legal U-Turn and go to the back parking lot. On other occasions, I found that if I persisted in going the opposite direction from where I was supposed to be going, she just stopped talking to me altogether. In the case of VZ Navigator, it would be good if they took advantage of the back-channel and let you inform them when they're giving you bad advice. It might be as simple as a single button press to tell them "Got Bad Directions Here" or even better, the capability to leave a brief voice message saying what was bad about it. The GPS in my Lincoln Aviator simply recomputes my course and starts giving me new directions when I deviate substantially. This is one of the issues that a lot of users have with nav systems in general. I've got a PDA nav (OnCourse Navigator 5, off the market now), for example, and hear the same complaints from those users. People don't tend to make the mental leap that nav systems don't always have to agree with the driver, and if they don't, you've got to choose if you'll follow its directions or go with your intuition. Generally speaking, the software gets it right, though, unless you really don't give it a specific exception or request. My nav, for example, once got me to a job interview on time when traffic on southbound I95 was snarled. A road sign gave me a rough indication of how long the backup was, and I asked OCN5 to give me a 15-mile reroute. It took me off the interstate within .5 mile and ran me down US1 for about 17 miles, then hopped me back on the interstate. |
