I was told that if I wanted a pda at discount price, I would have to
get their data package for $44.00. Also was told that I could cancel
that package at anytime with no penalty. I have been trying to find a
copy of the data contract and havent been able to find it. Can anyone
help??

Who told you that?  Verizon does not carry PDAs.  They have no data pkg
for $44.00.

Either you are bullshitting or "someone" is blowing smoke up your a.s.

I'd imagine the OP is referring to "Handhelds," which Verizon refers to
as "PDAs & Smartphones."

And, yes, there are data plans in the $44 ballpark, although I'm pretty
sure they require a contract.

Palm OS devices are PDAs. VZW sells the Palm-powered 700p (which I
have). I am also paying $44/month for an unlimited data plan for that
700p...no BS and no smoke.

I use a Verizon XV6600 PDA/phone. Unlimited data is $44.99/month. I use
wModem to tether it to my laptop via the USB sync cable, and my wife
uses a Bluetooth adapter to tether hers to it. With the unlimited data
plan, we even get data access in almost all "Extended Network" areas.

Works good, last a long time.

Which kind do you have? I noticed the Q and the 700p could be tethered, but
that the 700w could not. Weird.

You can tether the 700w with PDA2Net software.

I read the store flyers and it said that phone can't be used as a modem
for a computer or laptop, and I even have the USB data cable.   How did
you manage that ?

Not sure what the XV-6600 is unless he is referring to a XV-6700. The
6700 cannot be used to tether.

i have had a vx6600 and a vx6700 and i was able to set up a blue tooth
connection between it and my laptop with good results speed was good in
a EVDO area but barely above dial up in a non EVDO area, check  the
howard forams web site for how to do this

In my experience, in an EVDO area the Bluetooth tether on my XV6600
performs at around 200-400 kbps, and the USB tether at around 400-800
kbps. I have used it in about ten EVDO areas around the country.

In non-EVDO areas, I get 100-140 kbps downloads with both. The latency
involved with cellular connections, though, makes web surfing not much
different from dialup in non-EVDO areas.

Try Googling "XV6600".

I use my Verizon XV6600 tethered to my laptop. I can tether it via
Bluetooth with no additional software. I downloaded a copy of wModem to
use it with the USB cable.

> The 6700 cannot be used to tether.

I guess you mean either *you* can't tether a 6700 <g> or Verizon doesn't
support tethering the XV6700.

The XV6700 can certainly be tethered. I have read postings from users
who say that it even ships with a copy of wModem on the CD that comes
with the phone.

 Again, try Googling "tethered xv6700".

In the latest brochure which I picked up yesterday the XV6700 as not
able to act as "Tethered Modem with Broadband Access Connect".

Maybe you are accessing the internet via some other protocol?

Ah, I see the reason for the confusion.

"BroadbandAccess Connect" is a $59.99/month data plan (less for
Blackberry devices) for various phones, smartphones, and PDA/phones to
support tethering. (http://preview.tinyurl.com/2gqtfk)

With an XV-6700, you buy a "PDA/Smartphone Unlimited MB" plan (that's
what my bill says) for $44.99/month. Verizon does not provide support
for tethering these devices as part of that plan, but it's trivial to
do, at least with the 6600 and 6700 devices.

Again, I am using an XV6600, but I am reporting what users of the XV6700
have said. They use wModem, which is included on the XV6700 CD. I had to
download a copy to use with my XV6600.

Here are the directions for tethering the XV6700:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=827559

Hope that helps.

Yea it does Dave.  So who/what do you use for an ISP?

Since Verizon requires a data plan with a PDA/phone, Verizon is the ISP.
Dial #777, use the usual VZW user ID/password, etc.

I still have my Internet Alaska POP account, simply to maintain the
email address I have had for 11 years, and I use gmail for SMTP
services.

Thanks again Dave.  I've used #777 off and on over many years, probably
back to the mid 90s when I tethered my cell phone to my Palm Pilot.  I
still use it occasionally with my Moto V710 and Axim X51v or my laptop
but have no data plan...I know, I know!  :-)

There's a package that will get you unlimited data for a little
less...maybe $39.99...that includes 2000 text messages also. Remember,
in a Smartphone/Datphone device, txt messages are not "data" to Verizon.

Simply not true:

Verizon's legaleze says:
"UNLIMITED DATA PLANS AND FEATURES
Unlimited Data Plans and Features (such as NationalAccess,
BroadbandAccess, Push to Talk, and certain VZEmail services) may ONLY be
used with wireless devices for the following purposes: (i) Internet
browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to
corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like
customer relationship management, sales force, and field service
automation). The Unlimited Data Plans and Features MAY NOT be used for
any other purpose. Examples of prohibited uses include, without
limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading or
streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or
host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera
posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine–to–machine
connections or peer–to–peer (P2P) file sharing; or (iii) as a substitute
or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. This means, by
way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet,
downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets
is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services
and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is
prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses, continuously for one
hour, could typically use 100 to 200 MBs, or, if engaged in prohibited
uses for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, could use more than 5 GBs in a
month.

For individual use only and not for resale. We reserve the right to
protect our network from harm, which may impact legitimate data flows. We
reserve the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, and
to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is
using an Unlimited Data Plan or Feature in any manner prohibited above or
whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. Anyone using
more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the
service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to
immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice. We
also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer
Agreement term"

$60/month buys you 5GB/month of email, webpage spam and company
intranet....no
downloading/streaming/FTP/P2P/TV/Radio/UPloading/gaming...all forbidden,
see above.

In the cellphone dictionary, "unlimited" only means you can access it any
time, not actually USE it.  5GB and you're TOAST!

There are actually 3 data plan options....(1) pay as you go, (2)
$25.00 for 10 mb plan, and (3) unlimited plan for whatever the price is
($39 is what I remember hearing).
I just got a new XV-6700 with the full data plan (3) and still trying
to figure out how to use it.

The unlimited data plan you are referring to,  I believe,  is $44.99 if
it is with a qualifying calling plan.  Hopefully you aren't planning on
tethering with the XV-6700.

BTW, the unlimited data plan for these PDA/phones is $44.99/month.

Mine is less, and it includes 2000 text messages. I use it with the 700w

It's called the "PDA SMS 2000 allowance" and it's 39.99

Where are these data plans?  The plans I see for smart/pda phones start
at $79.99.

I don't see them on the web site any more.

When I select a PDA/phone now, it comes up with bundled
NationalAccess/voice plans, with no Broadband connectivity:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/yquvaa

Apparently, you now add the "BroadbandAccess Connect Plan" (for $15/mo)
to the "Voice and Data Choice Bundle": http://preview.tinyurl.com/2b6kjq

At $79.99 for 450 data and voice minutes, plus $15 for unlimited (OK, up
to 5 GB) Broadband and NationalAccess, that's $94.99/month, about $10
more than I am paying for 400 voice minutes plus unlimited data under my
old plan.

Thanks for forcing me to plow through the VZW web pages to find current
pricing. <g>

I guess everyone was referring to pricing form an earlier purchase.  I
recall seeing the $59.99 pricing a few weeks back but it isn't there
now.

Why would you have to add the $15.00/mo plan for unlimited BB/NA if you
get voice&data for $79?

If the lowest cost voice/data/bb choice is $95/month that cuts me out,
just can't afford that.  $59 was okay, $79 would be a squeeze, $95 is
not a choice.

I don't see unlimited BB for $79. The $79.99 bundled
NationalAccess/voice plan for PDA/Smartphones is NA only, no BB

That seems to be the cheapest available for those services, from what I
can glean from their web site.

Another option is a BB capable phone, like the Samsung SCH-a990. You can
get 450 minutes for $39.99 and add BB for $59.99, but that's even more
expensive.

I guess I don't understand the definitions of BB/National Access.  I
thought data was data.  I'm assuming there are limitations on NA
(speed?/ kb allowance?) that are less than unlimited (5gb) BB?

They sure don't make it easy to make an intelligent choice!

This has me seriously considering changing carriers,  which previously I
didn't think I would do.  We were considering dropping our landline
providing I can get decent cell reception here at the house with a yagi
and repeater atenna inside and a decent data account so my wife has it
when she travels.  Doesn't look real feasible with verizon now.

thanks for your help!

NA service is available in all native Verizon areas. With a data plan,
it is also available in most "Extended Network" areas. We travel full
time throughout the Lower 48, with occasional trips to Alaska. In the
Lower 48, we have had NA service at least 95% of the time for the last
four or five years.

NA tops out at 144 kbps. Typical download speeds are 100-130 kbps, while
upload speeds are 60-80 kbps, in our experience. There is no apparent
limit on how much data you can transfer each month with NA, but at those
speeds you would have a hard time exceeding 5 GB.

BB is available only in metropolitan areas. Verizon says that they cover
200 million people with their current BB service. That is probably true,
but as RVers  we seldom stay in metropolitan areas. We have been in 10
or 12 such areas since Verizon introduced it.

BB (EVDO Rev. 0) tops out at 2.1 Mbps download and 144 kbps upload.
Typical speeds for us have been 400-800 kbps down and 60-80 kbps up.
They are currently rolling out EVDO Rev. A, which requires different
user hardware.  They say that Rev. A will do a maximum of 3.1 Mbps down
and 1.8 Mbps up.  Importantly for web surfing, Rev. A also reduces
latency, which is what make web browsing relatively slow on cellular
connections.

>They sure don't make it easy to make an intelligent choice!

Amen.

Depending where you want to use the service, Verizon may not be the best
choice. For those of us who are never in one place for very long,
Verizon offers the best national service. I have even had good NA in
several Alaska locations.

It seems like you are basing everything on the website. I would give CS
a call or pop into a store. I have found on a number of occasions that
websites don't offer every possible combination probably for
simplicity's sake.
