XV 6700 & data transfer

Art S - 19 Apr 2007 07:58 GMT I'm considering getting the XV 6700, but don't want internet access. According to Verizon, if I have them block internet access to the phone, they will get rid of a $100 discount for buying an advanced phone (so I pay $100 more).
If I don't provide connection information, is the phone still able to connect so I would need to pay a fee (I know it couldn't actually connect to an ISP; the question is could it do something meeting Verizon's definition, resulting in a charge).
Thanks
Art

Are you sure you're understanding them correctly? I doubt they're going to knock $100 off just because you might stumble into some accidental data usage! Are you sure the $100 discount isn't in return for signing up for some sort of monthly data plan or package?

The phone is preprogrammed with the data connection info for Verizon. Right out of the box it can use Verizon data without you "providing connection info." I have another carrier's version of that phone, and I'm able to delete the carrier's data profile (if I chose to, but I use mobile data.) Given Verizon's reputation for crippling phone features, I won't swear on a stack of bibles you can delete the Verizon data profiles on a 6700, but you should be able to in the phone's connection settings, then it will have no possible way to use Verizon data.

I told them that I wanted them to disable internet access - so that if I or the phone tried to connect, it would be rejected by Verizon. After verifying that it could be done, they told me that they would need to remove a $100 discount because it didn't count as an advanced phone (at least that's what I think they called it). At that point there was no mention of data plans (or that the $100 was a discount for signing up for a data plan). That doesn't mean that you are incorrect of course - just that that isn't how they explained it to me. And I find your suggestion quite likely, to be honest.

OK, thanks.

That's one reason I was willing to pay $100 for my XV6600 rather than get a free New-Every-Two phone last time. In six or seven months I saved enough on the data plan to amortize the extra cost for the phone.
I didn't know they would sell you the phone without a data plan. Thanks for the info.

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=planFirst&action=viewPl anList&sortOption=priceSort&typeId=3&subTypeId=4&catId=448
Where are you guys finding this $44.99/month plan. I also cannot locate the $59.99/mo voice/data plan which I believe is the end product of combining the $44.99/mo data and $15.00/mo voice special plan/
Obviously I'm missing something on the web site somewhere.

In you response to my post, you weren't missing anything. My $44.99 data plan doesn't seem to appear on their web site any longer. Sorry.

My $44.99 data > plan doesn't seem to appear on their web site any longer. Sorry. FYI, I just got a used 6700 on Ebay, and when I had Vzw activate it (web activation kept failing) in place of my previous phone (Nokia 6236i), I immediately checked my features for it on my account on the website, and there was a data plan I had never had before for 44.95, so that seems to confirm Dave's statement.
When I called about that to see if I could drop it, the rep said that was "standard", but that I could go to a per KB plan, but I was not comfortable with that, and asked if there was some way to block data access completely. He said he would have to check with tech support to see if/how that could be done. I already knew how from asking the same Q on Howard Forums (registry tweak), but wanted to see what the official "line" was. Anyway, the registry tweak is a d-i-y solution, and Vzw should have a way to disable data access from their end.
While I was on hold for that, the already weak call dropped. Since my house is "RF resistant" (all cell phones' signals seem to be reduced in and around it), I figured this "phone" was not going to cut it (reviews said reception was weak), so I reverted to plan B, and decided to just use it for a wifi PDA (not many with such a decent keyboard like the older Jornada 6x0 and 72x HPC's).
My next call a few minutes later to Vzw was to get the number switched back to the Nokia, and I am back to a gadget on each hip (but the Nokia IS small, and the 6700 is at least narrower than my Palm Zire 72, with more overall functionality, even if not so great for PIM functions as a Palm ;-).
I also made sure that 44.95 data plan charge was removed.

My understanding is that if you tweak the phone, you MUST be signed up for a data plan because Verizon can't tell that you can't connect to the internet. (By the way - do you have a URL to the registry tweak?)
If they block access, you don't need an access plan.
Why weren't you comfortable with the per KB plan? I'm mulling over getting the 6700 and blocking access myself and getting the per KB plan.

I need to get a handle on my likely data volume with this kind of setup to be "comfortable" with a per KB plan, which, BTW, it seems is now a "feature" associated with my Nokia. It seems I have lost the "backdoor" data access since I got Vzw's attention with the switching back and forth of the 2 phones. They are showing 175KB data usage for most recent period up through 4/19. Thinking that was a deliberate limited experiment with my typical access of the Internet from the Zire via infrared link to the Nokia, which always used to show as a data call in my previous bills, but no KB's, and no charge, but now that there is an actual KB amount, I suspect there will be a charge - RATS!
Maybe I will just switch over to Sprint for year or 2, to re-set everything, and see how that works since my employer-funded EVDO AirCard for my work notebook works very well most places I have taken it.
