Which Treo and what data plan?
Something about this doesn't sound right...for one thing phone book
transfers are "Usually" done with cables or by placing the phone in a
device not infrared. Also, you can do it online for free. Not sure
what "few rounds of e-mail" would be and "several hours" on phone.

Agreed. Actually, I just bought a Treo and had my numbers transferred from
my LG VX8300 (via cable) in the store. I have almost 400 contacts. They were
brought across just fine. Many with three or four numbers and email
addresses attached to the contact.
As for doing it free online... if you are referring to Backup Assistant,
that is not available with PDA devices. Also, Get It Now is not available.
Instead you use Active Sync (software provided free in the box) to save your
contacts to your own personal PC.

Thanks for the info, didn't know it wasn't available for
PDA/Smartphones.

2 verizon stores in San Diego told me it was done via infrared on the
600 and my infrared was dead. Online is only free if it supports your
phone, the free online deal that comes with my acct didn't support my
Treo 600.

It cost 20 dollars fot an application that'd support both phones, the
rest was bandwidth charges. The Treo wasn't supported on the free with
my account backup plan, I wound up having to try wireless sync I believe?
