3Q 2007: another successful quarter for Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless added a net of 1.6 million customers (added 1.8 million
retail customers, lost 200 thousand wholesale customers) for a total of
61.8 million retail customers and 63.7 total customers.  Almost all the
retail additions were post-paid customers.

Verizon's churn is an industry low, at 1.21% retail and .96 retail
post-paid.

Verizon scored a 14.4% increase in total revenue at $11.3 billion, making
it the largest US wireless company based on total revenue.  Data revenue
is up 63.4%.

By comparison, AT&T Mobility's 2 million new customers break down to 1.4
million retail customers (1.2 million postpaid, 200 thousand prepaid), and
600 thousand wholesale (mostly TracFone) customers.  This, in spite of all
of the iPhone foofaraw.

Note that a whopping 40% of AT&T's new customers are prepaid (directly or
TracFone), lower-quality markets that Verizon is busily exiting.  This
also indicates that quite a few iPhones were sold to existing AT&T
customers instead of bringing in new customers.

"Verizon is really hurting due to iPhone."  NOT!!  ;-)

Is it just me or does something NOT add up??  This is the biggest
carrier in the USA.  Now, in another thread, I posted that the
manufacturers made about 286,000,000 Sellphones in the last
quarter, right?  That's a LOT of new Sellphones!  Nokia, alone,
made over 100,000,000!  Places outside America must be just
swimming in new Sellphones!

Verizon may (or may not, since AT&T is very close to the same size)
be the biggest carrier in the USA, but in terms of subscribers Verizon
may not even be in the top 10 in the world.  According to the list
above the top 20 carriers in the world alone have about 1.8 billion
customers, and there are lots and lots of smaller companies not on
the top 20 list.

Most of the market for mobile phones is outside the US.
