I'm looking for a smartphone/pda for contacts, calendar, etc.,
however, I'm not interested and too cheap for the data service. I like
the look of the Blackberry 7130e for Verizon. Is it possible to use
the device without the data service? I want to sync my Outlook
Contacts, Calendar, Tasks with the phone through a USB cable.

Does this sound feasible?

Thanks.

I just got a BB through Verizon. To the best of my knowledge they required a
data plan to activate it. I don't know what would happen if you, say, bought
one independently and activated it yourself online,

or brought to an independent Verizon reseller and asked them to do it.  My
guess is you can't get away with it.

Perhaps you should be thinking of one of the Windows Mobile Smartphone PDAs
instead?

Btw, my 2 cents: the EVDO data service is very, very good, and you may find
it more useful than you are thinking to have some internet access wherever
you go. I think their data plans start as low as $25/month. You might want
to reconsider.

I just looked into this when I changed phones.  Bottom line- Verizon
wouldn't let me get a smart phone without adding a data service.  So I
got a Motorola W385 and Motorola Phone Tools with USB cable.  In Phone
Tools, if you set up the phone as a W385 you can sync only contacts,
not calendar.  But if you pick a different modem you will be able to
sync calendar and phone, and even upload pictures to your phone. This
at least got me part of what I would have with a smart phone, and
without paying for a data plan.  Couldn't sync tasks unfortunately.
