I've seen some industry level reviews (so far all good), about the new
Env2.   Anyone out there get one yet and if so, how do you like it?

tks

Several people have posted very positive reviews on phonescoop.com.

I absolutely HATE it. I get dropped calls all the time where I live,
which is a signal problem and just using it is much more of a pain
than my previously owned Blackjack 1.  I am going back to a
Blackjack 2 in a few days (And back to att). I am VERY disappointed
with the phone and the service.

I have had mine a week now.   Pretty much OK as I learn how to use it.
The screen and keyboard are fairly good for Mobile Web 2 and text
messages (so far just used for receiving "pages" from unix scripts I set
up at work to send me info about server apps I support).

Music playing is nice (once I learned I had to put my MP3's in a folder
on the micro-sd card named "my_music", and no sub-folders (kinda messy
when I was ripping/copying files from my PC and and another micro-sd
card I am using in a Sansa Express MP3 player).  Dunno if it is quirk of
some albums' method for naming tracks, but Linux absolutely won't
transfer a file with colons in the title - probably thinks I am trying
to do scp or somesuch where that is key part of the syntax ;-).  The
sound comes thru my Motorola HT350 BT headset very well (easy to pair,
too), but since I am deaf in 1 ear, stereo is not an option, so cannot
comment on that.  The builtin speakers do nicely for close-up listening-
loud little jokers with decent quality (to my impaired hearing, anyway ;-).

Kind of annoying that the power/sync receptacle is a non-standard "USB"
type, but it turns out the "Music Essentials" kit for recent Motorola
v8/v9 units appears to have a compatible cable. If I decide to keep it,
I might try one of the $5 cheapies from eBay to see how that works vs
$30 or so for official VZW kit.

A real shocker (and not likely unique to this phone) was that once I got
the BT DUN connection to work, VZW popped right up on my PDA (Palm T/X)
browser with a big web page spelling out that I had to sign up right
then for the $60 data plan to get on their data network.  I never had a
prompt like that when I was using my previous Nokia 6236i as a modem on
the 1xRTT network occasionally, so figure they must be monitoring the
EVDO connections much more rigorously.  Even specifying qnc for Id and
password would not get it off the EVDO connection.

They are certainly entitled to set the terms for usage of their network,
but I would like to get some kind of low-cost, no-obligation trial to
see if it is even worth it.  I spend $50+ on a Sprint Aircard now, but
since it is a PCMCIA ("PC card") will only work in a notebook PC, and I
would like to consolidate my wireless comms one way or another.  I might
to with a PDA phone instead of the ENV2 so I can get the data/tethering
setup to do it all - should be able to get it down to a more reasonable
$48/mo with a 20% business discount via my employer. Does anyone know if
EVDO lets one use both voice and data tethering simultaneously?  Seems I
saw that claim somewhere recently.

A keeper if I don't pursue the PDAphone/tethering option.

FWIW,
ROC
