Backup Assistant Data Charges?

Title says it all. I backed up my phone one time last month and I see a
$1.99 data charge on my bill. I don't do any data from my phone-- just
make/receive a few calls.

So do they hit you with data charges for backing up your phone book one
time? If yes, well screw them. If they don't, guess I'll call up customer
no-service and complain....

You don't say what sort of phone you have. . . .

I back my phone "contacts" up to my PC using a USB cable and Motorola
Phone Tools.  I also enter new contacts on my PC and copy the updated
file to my phone.  It beats the hell out of trying to enter contacts via
the phone's keypad!

They do. Looks like you'll have to screw them.

I have had backup assistant for quite a while and I've never been
charged for it. If you have a "My Verizon" account it doesn't cost
anything. I am wondering why people who are savvy enough to post on
Usenet don't have a My Verizon account yet.

I recently got a new phone and downloaded all of my contacts to the new
phone from Backup Assistant. It was flawless and free.

I set my backup assistant account to automatically call in any changes
at a particular time of day. It has worked fine for me.

You're wrong about the data charge, Janet.

From the VZW website...

------------------
* Unless you subscribeto V CAST VPak, V CAST Mobile TV Select Package or
Nationwide Premium Plan, downloading the Backup Assistant application will
require approximately 1 MB of data. Data sent or received will be aggregated
each month, rounded up to the next megabyte and billed at $1.99 per MB.
------------------

The data transfer charge is different from the $1.99 monthly access charge
(which is free with a My Verison account).

I was on the phone with the CSR when we did the download to the new
phone. The charge came up however she assured me that the transfer
charge would not be billed to me because I have a My Verizon account.

The download was done on 9/22.  I have just, this moment, checked my
billing and there is no data charge on this date, or for any date within
my current statement.

I am sure what you quoted may be correct in some situations, but all I
know is what the CSR told me and the proof of it on my statement.

I had BA on one of my phones when I had the Americas Chioce Plan and it
worked just as you describe. As soon as I upgraded my plan (Americas Choice
Family plan) to the Natiowide Basic Familay plan, I stared to get billed
data for BA. I have been a member of My Account for many years. I'm
thinking, if you're on the AC plan, probably no data charges would apply. If
you're on the Nationwide plan, they would. What plan do you have?

I'll bet you're right, Frank.

Under the America's Choice plan data calls were treated like
voice calls. Until VZW started eliminating the service, users
were able to connect to the Internet for "minutes of use," for
example.

Under the Nationwide plan, ANY data calls are billed (currently
at $1.99/MB) as data. It would follow, then, that downloading the
Backup Assistant application would be free for those of us on the
America's Choice plan and cost $1.99 for folks on the Nationwide
plan.

Since VZW says that USING the application is free of charge,
users should not expect any data charges after the initial
download of the app.

America's Choice II. Though they did say they were going to "upgrade" me
to the new Nationwide something or other which is nothing more than the
new name for ACII.  My account, on line, still shows ACII

Yes, the only real difference with ACII and Nationwide is that on Nationwide
you are prohibited for obtaining data utilizing "MOU" (Minutes of Use). With
Nationwide, the only way you can get data is with the data portion of the
plan. If you don't have one of the data type features, they just bill you
pay-as-you-go, which is $1.99 per MB. Probably not to be confused with the
$1.99 "fee" for downloading BA. I think that part is still free and/or will
be reimbursed if you have a My Account account. That's the difference I
think. The website is geared toward providing descriptions/instructions for
their *current* plans. ACII is a legacy plan.

I, too, have a "My Verizon" online account and after two years, have
never been charged for using their Backup Assistant application.

That's because you have the AC or ACIIplan. The new Nationwide plans charge
for it.

Janet is correct based upon my experience for the past year.

That's because you have AC or AC II. The Nationwide plan is different
regarding data.

Do you have, as quoted in the text on the VZW website "V CAST VPak, V CAST
Mobile TV Select Package or
> Nationwide Premium Plan"?

Nope. Just regular AC II with bonus 2,000 renewal minutes good for 2 years.

YES THEY DO AND NO THEY DO NOT.

If you enroll in "My Verizon" online (it is free) then they will not
charge you for that service.  If you do not they will charge you.  Enroll
right now and then call 611 and tell them and they will deduct it off your
bill.  Thereafter they will not charge you.
Jon@cebridge.net - 29 Sep 2008 15:19 GMT
If you have an AC/ACII plan, they will deduct minutes for
downloading data from GIN.  If you have a Nationwide plan, they
charge $2/MB.  If you signed up for My Verizon, they give you Backup
Assistant free.  That $2 charge is probably for the initial download
of Backup Assistant.  Contact CS and tell them you have a My Verizon
account and downloaded the FREE Backup Assistant and got charged
data for it.  They should give you at $2 credit.

OK-- here it is. I called customer no-service (is that new voice menu a
bitch or what!!) and finally got to LaShonda or Shamika who agreed to credit
the data charge--- but was clueless about what it was for. She said maybe
someone may have used my phone (I live by myself) or I used the net--- I
didn't

Anyway, no, I didn't d/l BA last month-- it's been on my phone for as long
as it's been available for free use by people with online My VZW accounts.

However, I did change my plan a few months back due to a significantly
reduced need for minutes-- and hadn't backed up since the change until last
month. When I made the plan change, I didn't realize that the new plan was
the Nationwide Plan rather than the AC 2 I'd been on for years and years.
That looks like the difference

So---- those who identified it as a data charge for backing up which is now
billable under the new Nationwide Plan were right.
