Saw something on HoFo about PagePlus banning new activations of Droids
and BlackBerrys-- possibly all smart phones--- and with no notice to
dealers.
Yes, no?

Believe what you read on HoFo at your own risk.
HoFo is full of scared old women who post something as being "definitely
true" the moment they hear even the slightest hint of an idea from some
a.shole at the local bar.

How about a link to your "something on HoFo"! And why post it on
alt.cellular.verizon? How does it affect us?

Here you go--

...and it affects "us" because PP is an MVNO using the Verizon Wireless
Prepaid network...

I'm using a Samsung i760 smartphone with PP. The phone uses WiFiRemote
to enable my laptop to go online via wireless Bluetooth, enabling
efficient email-checking, etc. on travel. I use Nodata to control the
phone's access to broadband, as I have only 50MB per month on the TNT
plan. Wish that could be increased without massive charges.
It would be a grave issue if PP begins disallowing my smartphone.

No. All smartphones are welcome on Pageplus because pageplus sells data at
$1.20/MB or 20 or 50MB included on the monthly plans. If some idiot would
pay me $1.20/MB for data, I'd send a tech around to make sure the idiot's
smartphone was configured on PP and have him shine up the case.
There is no unlimited data plan. Tethering is allowed, but only an idiot
would pay so much to use it.

It's true- I got the email Friday from a Page Plus distributor - no more
smartphone activations. (Kinda sorta- I'll expand on that below.)
My WAG (wild-a.s guess) is that PP has an unlimited data plan up their
sleeves to compete with Straight Talk, and doesn't want to be screwed by
smartphone users chewing through data like candy.
So far, according to posts on HoFo, the smartphone ban is limited to
devices made by RIM (Blackberries) and HTC (including Palm Treos and
"Verizion" brand smartphones like the XV-6700s, 6800s, etc. ) Page Plus
doesn't seem to have a way (yet) to determine what is or isn't a
smartphone by ESN, so they simply "banned" devices of the two
manufacturers (based on the manufacturer code in the ESN) who ONLY build
smartphones.
Smartphones by companies like Samsung are safe (so far) because banning
all Samsungs would block many Samsung dumbphones as well.

Thanks for the information. I'm sure many are interested in hearing
first-hand information on this.

They no longer allow Verizon InPulse phones to be activated on
PagePlus.
I did not hear anything about smart phones being banned. Verizon was
upset that so many PagePlus dealers were buying up InPulse phones at
various stores and selling them for use on PagePlus. The InPulse
phones are still subsidized, but since they could be used on PagePlus,
which is much less expensive than InPulse, Verizon was losing money. A
couple of months ago I got my son a replacement phone for PagePlus at
Fry's, A Verizon InPulse Samsung Smooth for less than $7!
Of course you probably wouldn't want a Blackberry on PagePlus anyway.
I don't know about the Droid. Someone that pays a $350 ETF and $200
for the Droid is not losing any money for Verizon!
